At its core, "Tuner" is a love story. The love of music. The love of a man and a woman. But most importantly... ...the writers' love for their male protagonist. Leo Woodall plays a gifted young pianist with hyperacusis (extreme sensitivity to sound), whose extraordinary hearing also makes him an expert safecracker. When the elderly couple who gave him a chance fall on hard times, he agrees to use his unusual gift working for an Israeli-owned security company that secretly commits burglaries on the side. Woodall is mesmerizing, and Daniel Roher & Robert Ramsey's script gives his character intelligence, vulnerability, and quiet determination without ever making him feel weak. It's refreshing to watch a movie that lets a young man be capable, resourceful, and genuinely sympathetic instead of turning him into the punchline. Dustin Hoffman shows up as his mentor and surrogate father, although he's sadly underused. And that ending... Perfect. Elegant. Bittersweet. Exactly the kind of ending that stays with you after the credits roll. Highly recommended.
