We spoke with @NewsOn6 Kim Jackson about summer water safety. A Water Watcher is a responsible adult whose only job is watching children in and around the water. No phones. No distractions. Rotate the responsibility every 15–20 minutes to stay alert. facebook.com/share/p/1F5z3ge…

With dangerous heat indices expected across the area, staying hydrated is one of the most important things you can do to protect yourself from heat-related illness. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink water. Start hydrating early in the day and continue drinking fluids throughout the day. If you know you’ll be spending time outdoors, try to “pre-hydrate” by drinking water before heading outside and continue taking regular water breaks while you’re in the heat. Heat safety tips: • Drink plenty of water throughout the day • Limit alcohol and excessive caffeine, which can contribute to dehydration • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing • Take frequent breaks in air-conditioned or shaded areas • Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day when possible • Check on older adults, young children, and pets Signs of dehydration can include: • Thirst • Dry mouth • Headache • Dizziness • Fatigue • Dark-colored urine If you begin feeling ill from the heat, move to a cooler location, drink water, and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen. Stay weather-aware, plan ahead, and take the heat seriously. A little preparation can help prevent a medical emergency.
