In India to lead a stress free and low cost of living life, you need to have three uncles: One Politician, One Lawyer, and one Doctor. "Cut practice" is a real thing in the Indian medical system. It is estimated 80% of referring clinicians get a cut of upto 40% of the cost of scans. The medical council of India prohibits this, but it is a widespread practice in the industry. The practice is very harmful to patients and even radiologists. Patients have to pay a lot more. Sometimes 100% more for a scan. This can sometimes prevent them from taking an important test. Since there is a good monetary incentive, some clinicians may refer patients needlessly to take scans, which may include scans with ionising radiation that can be detrimental to patient health if taken repeatedly and unnecessarily. And radiologists do not get as much money as testing centres have to pay the referring clinician. This is bad for them, as well as it prevents many good students from taking up radiology due to low renumeration compared to clinicians. All in all a scourge affecting the medical system. Some "holier than thou" docs in India with god syndrome will now come to attack and deny this. So let's brace. We all know the truth. The GoI has tried since 2014 to fight this, including raids and sting operations, yet has been unable to end this "underground" practice.
