The 2027 Model Y L seems to lack the previously fitted 4D in-cabin radar from earlier Model Ys that detects rear passengers, including children, via respiration and heart rate. Service mode on my new YL shows the front cabin radar (under the headliner behind the dome lights) only reports driver and front passenger occupancy. Rear seats rely on seat-based sensors for seatbelts and crash safety. No radar based rear detection like my 2024 Model Y had with the 4D mm-wave cabin radar. Older Model Ys used Tesla’s more advanced 4D cabin radar to detect respiration and heart rate through seats and blankets. Tesla’s March 2025 comments indicated this would support child presence detection. The Child Left Alone Detection feature shipped in 2025.14.12 and uses that sensing to alert owners and run HVAC. This matters for a child left in a hot vehicle. Without reliable radar coverage of the rear cabin, the three row Model YL cannot reliably trigger those alerts or automatic climate response the way prior Model Ys could. If the newest family-oriented Model Y has less rear cabin sensing than earlier ones, that is a regression.
