we scored 35,000 freelance job posts in the last 7 days. two numbers on the client's profile predict almost everything:
1. payment verified?
unverified clients post bad jobs at 6x the rate (14.8% vs 2.3% failing our red-flag screen)
2. ever spent anything?
54% of job posts come from clients who have never paid a freelancer. their bad-job rate: 11.4%. clients with ANY hire history — even a small one — drop under 3%.
the surprise: the real gap isn't small clients vs big clients. it's "never hired" vs "hired once."
check two numbers. skip most of the garbage. spend your connects on the rest.

saving connects doesn't save you money. it selects the worst clients on the platform.
i scanned 513,129 upwork job posts, february to august. median budget by what it costs to bid:
1-8 connects → $30
9-12 → $100
13-16 → $250
17-21 → $1,000
2.6x the connects. 33x the money.
and the cheap end is worse in every direction: 43% of those clients have a verified payment method, against 99.1% at the expensive end.
you're not saving. you're buying more, cheaper lottery tickets.
before you apply to a fixed-price job, do one division: budget ÷ honest hours.
we ran it on 17,233 fixed-price jobs from the last week, using realistic effort estimates:
→ median: $6.70/hr → 1 in 3 comes out under $3/hr → 1 in 5 pays $25+/hr
the $25/hr jobs don't look different at a glance. the division finds them.
sixty seconds with a calculator before you spend connects. every time.
