Why @TrySubject pivoted from being the “Netflix of Education.” On today’s TWiST, @MikeFromSubject joins the show to talk about his educational tech startup, Subject AI, and explains their shift in strategy. The company first launched with the goal of becoming “Netflix for Education,” a scrollable and high-quality selection of cinematic classroom-ready videos that could help teachers instruct students on complex ideas and concepts. However, they’ve now shifted their mission from producing original educational video content to training an AI to serve as a teacher’s assistant. The tech helps teachers switch their approach to an “adaptive learning” model, breaking classrooms into smaller groups and giving students more one-on-one tutoring time. (While one pod works with Subject AI’s customized tools, the teacher can focus on the students who need the most direct instruction!) Rather than letting AI take over the job of teaching entirely, its best use could be freeing up human teachers from repetitive tasks like grading papers and giving lectures, allowing them to spend their time actually, you know… TEACHING.

We assumed students would watch our @TrySubject videos solo on laptops. Teachers proved us wrong. They started streaming lessons on big screens, creating blended, group-learning experiences. Lesson learned: the best product ideas don’t come from founders. They come from teachers.

Five years ago, I was trapped in a $70K a year Zoom MBA program. In my misery, I found solace in @netflix shows like Tiger King and Last Dance. As I took in these mesmerizing stories and high production value, I came to a realization: if my MBA program looked like these shows, I would be just as enthralled in class as I was outside of it. So I started building a company called @TrySubject, and I made a promise to myself that we’d become the Netflix of Education. We started small. We filmed Season 1 of our educational content on @UCLA's campus with no budget, and we were scrappy with what we had. Five years later, we just wrapped Season 6 - and thanks to the incredible work of my team, including my amazing CPO @joelhames, I’m starting to see my vision of becoming the Netflix of Education coming to fruition. In Season 6, students will enjoy content with multiple camera angles, engaging B-roll, and different set designs across a full 5th-12th grade course library. It’s our most engaging, Hollywood-style season yet…and we’re still only getting started. I’m so proud of our work over the past five years. We’re always fighting to create content that will invite students to truly love their education, and Season 6 is our best effort so far. I can’t wait to see how this new season brings life to learning like never before.

Leo Perez, Associate Superintendent of @ShastaUnionHSD, never planned to be an educator. He started in biotech but discovered his passion for teaching in grad school while leading a biology lab. One pivotal moment? Teaching a special education class. At first, he assumed students might struggle with traditional science concepts. But when he introduced hands-on, project-based learning, something remarkable happened: Every student exceeded expectations. Leo realized it’s an educator’s job to build systems that fit students—not fit students into systems. Today, Leo champions Career Technical Education (CTE), project-based learning, and the role of AI in keeping public schools relevant. He’s proof that education needs adaptable, forward-thinking leaders. It was an honor to host him on On The Subject. Listen to his episode below ⬇️ PS: Shoutout to Shasta Union HSD—a long-standing partner of ours—for their innovation! 💡 #education #edchat

Kathleen Porter, Exec Director at @PowayUnifiedUnified, has spent 38 years challenging norms & creating opportunities. Inspired by her mom—an attorney raising 4 kids—Kathleen sees no boundaries, only possibilities. In 2008, she launched engineering education in Poway Unified. Today, STEM learning thrives across all grades. Her impact extends to adults too. Rodney, once incarcerated, found a second chance at Poway Adult School. With support, he earned his diploma, graduated college, and is now thriving. Kathleen proves education is a lifeline, a second chance, and a path to a brighter future. 💡 #Education #Leadership #Inspiration

“I think education should be more of a menu of options where students can customize their learning experience.” Shockingly, that wasn’t me touting our mission at @TrySubject! That was @PowayUnified School District’s Director of Alternate Programs Patty Hurt, speaking on an upcoming episode of On The Subject about the importance of helping students who don’t fit into traditional school models. Patty brings 33 years of experience in education, where she’s made her mark as a math teacher as well as an advocate for alternative education, customized learning plans, and the integration of mental health resources in curricula. In our conversation, we talk about the generational shift in student expectations (particularly among Gen Z and Gen Alpha), how important it is to engage overlooked middle-tier students, and why she believes in a menu of options for students to personalize their educational journey. Patty was an amazing guest - and not just because she’s so aligned on the Subject point of view on education 😉 Listen to our full conversation at the link in the comments ⬇️

Big news from Subject…in June 2025 we’re launching Subject AI, our new AI-powered operating system 🥳 Meet Spark. It’s a game-changer: we’re going from teacher’s assistant to teacher’s command center. Subject AI is our fourth product, joining our premium courseware, multilingual courses, and Teacher of Record SKUs. It’s the next step in our vision to lead the digital learning industry in content and data solutions. We aim to be the Netflix of Education (for students), and the operating system for teachers. Designed with teachers in mind, Subject AI streamlines critical workflows through an intuitive interface, giving educators more time to focus on what matters most: building strong relationships with students. Here’s how Subject AI will transform how teachers teach work and students learn: ✅ Simplified workflows: Subject AI takes the most critical tasks - like grading, feedback, lesson planning, professional development, and in-school communication - and makes them seamless and intuitive. ✅ Always accessible: Our goal is to be in every teacher’s pocket. We want teachers to have access to the best tool wherever and whenever they need it, and that’s what Subject AI brings to the table. ✅ Flexible for districts: Districts have the option to opt in or out of Subject AI, giving them control over how our platform integrates into their ecosystem. ✅ Improved learning experiences: Subject AI’s new, optimized learning experience brings students a learning experience that truly resonates with them. Think: all kinds of new and engaging assignment types, such as audio conversations, video assessments, and multimedia interactions. ✅ Teacher support: Subject AI acts as a helping hand to teachers, providing predictive insights and support so that they can focus more on teaching and less on administrative tasks. I’m so excited about this milestone for Subject. With Subject AI, we’re moving beyond just providing another education tool - we’re giving teachers a full suite of educational tools, all powered by an AI-enabled operating system. Subject AI will fully launch in June 2025. We’ll collect continuous feedback from educators as they try out different tools within the platform, so we can continually refine it. I can’t wait to hear from our educators about how Subject AI helps them do what we all love most: give students more and more opportunities to learn and grow. Big news alert 🎉@TrySubject just earned @CogniaOrg accreditation. Here’s what this means for us👇🏽 1️⃣ Our courses exceed rigorous standards of academic excellence 2️⃣ We are better positioned than ever to reach a broader student population This is our second major accreditation stamp for Subject - we already have @ACSWASC accreditation. By meeting the standards of these two accreditation agencies, we’ve met the same academic bar as the best high schools in the country. Anyone who has gone through an accreditation process understands how extremely intensive it can be. Huge thanks to Sarah Vargas, @joelhames, and Hollie Sterling for their relentless efforts to help us realize this goal 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 From day 1, we’ve wanted to be the most engaging online learning platform - and the most academically rigorous one, too. So many online learning platforms are doing the bare minimum for students. By failing to meet higher accreditation standards, they not only limit the value of their course credits (i.e., most colleges don’t recognize nonaccredited courses), but they fail to give students a rich learning experience. Our team was adamant about doing better. We want every Subject course to: ✅ Challenge students academically ✅ Improve students’ access to higher education ✅ Wildly engage students Our unwavering commitment to helping students nationwide have access to an extremely rigorous AND engaging education is why our partners @kleinerperkins, @OwlVC, and @LattitudeVC champion our work. They know what we know… Students can and should have it all. Check out the Yahoo Finance article here: finance.yahoo.com/news/subje…

We’re thrilled to welcome the legendary Jessie Woolley-Wilson to @TrySubject as a Board Observer! Jessie’s career in education speaks for itself: most recently she was the President and CEO of @DreamboxOnline, and before that, she was the President of 2 other EdTech companies. Plus, she’s an Operating Partner at @OwlVC, a Board Member of @quizlet, a Board Advisor for Class, and a PE/VC advisor for 2 other firms. It’s hard to improve on those stats, but I’m especially excited to have her in our corner because of the mentorship she’ll provide. She’s done precisely what I want to do👇🏽 When Jessie took over as President and CEO of DreamBox Learning, the company had no revenue and only 13 employees. Under her leadership, the company hit a $1B+ valuation 🚀📈 Most people who try to give me advice have never worked at a firm that’s sub $10M in ARR, let alone one that’s sub $1M ARR. Jessie started from 0, and look where she took it. You can see why I want her to be looking over my shoulder. Not only is she a remarkable executive, a powerhouse in EdTech, and an ideal investment adviser, her mentor is @reedhastings, which means I’ll be getting all her insights - plus all the lessons she learned from him. Jessie is a dream addition to our team at Subject, and a dream mentor for me. So grateful to have you aboard, Jessie!
