Claw of Archimedes was an ancient weapon devised by Archimedes in 3rd Century BC to defend Greek colony city Syracuse on island of Sicily against amphibious assault.
It was a sort of crane-like mechanism with a suspended grappling hook used to lift enemy ships out of water before capsizing or dropping them. When a fleet of 60 Roman ships approached city walls under cover of darkness, machines were deployed, sinking many ships.
