One difficult moment does not define you.
Mistakes, losses, and setbacks are part of sport. What matters is how you respond: pause, take a breath, notice what you can learn, and focus on your next step.
Hear from Dr. Dinin on dealing with failure in the moment.

For today’s athletes, the game doesn’t end when they leave the field, court, or track. Social media, recruiting platforms, performance data, and constant visibility can create a 24/7 pressure cycle—while AI-generated and manipulated content is changing what feels real and trustworthy.
At the 2026 TrueSport Talks Symposium, hear from TrueSport Expert Deborah Gilboa, MD, and Athlete Ambassador Trey Jenifer, PLY, as they explore how hyperconnectivity and emerging technology are reshaping athlete identity, pressure, and mental wellness. This session will offer practical strategies for athletes, coaches, and sport leaders to set healthy boundaries, protect trust, and support athlete development in an always-on world.

A self-care check-in can be simple.
Ask yourself: How is my energy? What emotions am I carrying? Have I eaten, hydrated, rested, or connected with someone I trust?
There is no one perfect self-care routine. Start by noticing what you need today.

Trick or Treat? Negative self-talk helps you perform better. 🧟♂️
Trick. Harsh self-talk is not the same as motivation.
The way athletes talk to themselves before, during, and after competition can shape how they respond to pressure and setbacks. Noticing unhelpful patterns—and practicing more supportive self-talk—can help athletes approach challenges with greater awareness and confidence.
TrueSport Expert Dr. Kevin Chapman shares eight ways athletes can improve their self-talk for better performance:

Athlete wellbeing is part of good coaching.
Coaches have an opportunity to shape more than performance. The everyday environment they create—how they communicate, respond to challenges, and care for the people on their team—can make a meaningful difference in how athletes experience sport.
Hear from TrueSport Ambassador @JoeDelagrave on putting athlete wellbeing at the center of coaching.

Visualization can help you prepare with intention. It is not about guaranteeing an outcome. Visualization can be a way to mentally rehearse, focus on your next step, and approach challenges with greater confidence.
Before practice or competition, take a moment to picture yourself responding with effort, composure, and resilience.
Hear from TrueSport Talks speaker Anna Hall on using visualization in sport.
Try it this week: choose one moment you want to mentally rehearse before your next practice or competition.

On #WorldMentalHealthDay, we're thinking about how the stories we tell in sport affect how athletes see toughness, perfection, and success, and whether it feels safe to ask for help.
At the 2026 TrueSport Talks Symposium, @StephenBorelli, and Christine Brennan (@cbrennansports) from USA Today, Olympian and USADA Vice Chair, Kara Goucher (@karagoucher), and Kate Hartman Rosenzweig from the USOPC will look at how media narratives and cultural expectations can influence athlete mental wellness, and how intentional storytelling can help build sport cultures that are safer and more resilient.

When it comes to youth sport, setting boundaries is a form of self care.
Saying no to an extra commitment, protecting time for school or family, or stepping back when a schedule becomes unsustainable does not mean an athlete cares less about sport. Clear boundaries can protect time, energy, relationships, enjoyment, and long-term participation.
TrueSport Expert and licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Melissa Streno shares how caregivers and athletes can set boundaries that support the whole family—not just the next practice or opportunity.

Rest is not something you earn.
Rest is a basic part of caring for your body and mind. It can mean sleeping, taking a day off, doing something you enjoy outside of sport, or stepping back when your schedule feels overwhelming.
Making space to rest can help athletes return with more energy, perspective, and enjoyment.
How do you know when you need a reset?

Trick or Treat? More training always leads to better performance. 🦇
Trick. Athletes need recovery, too. Sleep, rest days, fueling, hydration, and time away from sport help athletes recover, reduce burnout risk, and return ready to support their teammates.
Choose one recovery habit to prioritize this week: sleep, fueling, hydration, a rest day, or time away from sport.

Feeling nervous before competition does not mean you are unprepared or that you do not belong.
Performance anxiety can be shaped by many pressures: social media, comparison, expectations about the future, frequent competition, and a culture that values outcomes over progress. The first step is noticing where that pressure is coming from and returning your attention to what you can control.
TrueSport Ambassador Luke Wang shares his perspective on performance anxiety. Watch the video, then explore six reasons performance anxiety is high in youth sport: na2.hubs.ly/H084bkB0

Self-care in youth sport is not a spa day. It is a decision.
It is the boundary a family holds when every other team says yes. It is the shortcut an athlete chooses to skip. It is the consistent call a coach makes so athletes are not left guessing. It is the definition of success an athlete chooses for themselves—not the one social media hands them.
This October, TrueSport will explore what self-care really looks like in youth sport: the everyday choices that protect well-being, keep sport in perspective, and help athletes stay connected to why they play.
Stay tuned for practical self-care guidance for athletes, coaches, and families all month long!
