Floss silk trees are in bloom around San Diego County. Many of the big, beautiful flowers become large, green fruit, about 5X the size of an avocado. When fruit cracks open later, balls of silk that give the tree its name emerge. They’re native to Australia & New Guinea. #trees

10,000 trees! & counting!TSD celebrated the planting of our 10,000th tree Thursday in La Mesa’s Harry Griffen Park. La Mesa is one of our many partners that have helped us hit 10K. Project Manager Daniel Bradley (below) prepares support poles for an Icee Blue Podocarpus. #trees

This morning, I held my annual Environmental Roundtable with several amazing community leaders. Thank you to all of the organizations who participated, sharing your priorities for the year and the important work that has been done to make the San Diego region more green. It is my goal to continue to push for policy that helps California address the climate crisis, and I cannot do that without engaging with our local advocates.

Urban trees are some of the hardest-working trees out there. As they line city streets, they protect residents and pedestrians from the elements and improve overall well-being and approach to community. The more of them we have, the better off we'll all be. 🌳

Despite their immense size, Giant Sequoias have surprisingly shallow root systems, typically extending only 6 to 12 feet deep. However, their roots spread widely, sometimes covering an acre of ground 🤯 This expansive network has helped anchor them against the test of time.

The vast majority of the year, the silk floss tree (Ceiba speciosa) provides no hints why it bears its name. Huge, green seed pods that resemble grenades hang from the tree for months. When the pods crack open, the silk floss, once used in life preservers, emerges. #trees
