He and his wife still work the same jobs. Their combined take home pay is $6,500 a month.
But look at what happened to the cost of keeping that house.
Property taxes went from $3,100 a year to $7,800. Homeowners insurance jumped from $1,200 to $2,900. After refinancing, their monthly house payment is now $2,450.
Daycare costs $1,700. The last car payment is $410. Groceries and utilities eat up another $1,150.
After all that, they have about $190 left each month, before a single repair, school expense, or kids’ activity.
Meanwhile, Zillow says their home is worth $590,000.
Almost twice what they paid. Hundreds of thousands in paper equity. And barely enough cash left to handle an unexpected bill.
They can’t sell and move somewhere comparable without taking on another $1,300 a month in housing costs, plus a longer commute for both of them.
So they stay in the house, postpone repairs, cut back wherever they can, and watch their net worth rise on paper while their actual bank balance barely moves.
