The biggest mistake I made as a college coach? I didn't call the HS coach of every incoming recruit.
That call...
a. Gives you valuable insights into the athlete.
b. Improves the chance the HS coach speaks well of you to their peers.
College coaches: This is low-hanging fruit.

Was last night’s feeding frenzy of ARs at BU a dream?
No, just a well-constructed reality made intelligently and intentionally of plywood:

Athletes: What's in your control these final weeks?
• Sleep
• Hydratation
• Visualizing the race
• Being the "right level" of excited for the race
Two things that aren't in your control
• The weather
• Course conditions
Focus on what you can control, not what you can't.

This may seem obvious, but for most athletes in most climates, it's worth a reminder:
Bring a change of dry clothes - at least a shirt/top - now that the weather is getting colder.
The chance of catching a cold is going up by the day, so take this small step to stay healthy.

A coach should fill these needs:
1. Being supported, not thwarted: having input, a voice, and a choice
2. The ability to make progress and to grow
3. Feeling connected to the team and mission, feeling like you belong
4. Have direction, meaning, & purpose

What I'm tired of is blaming players as soft, instead of coaches, leaders, parents taking some responsibility.
Of course, doing hard things, navigating adversity, taking on challenges is vital.
But make it purposeful and give kids the tools & environment to do so.
