The government must prioritise massive investment in our decimated public services and broken national infrastructure. It would be completely unacceptable to instead spend more money on foreign wars.
My comment for @thetimes. Prioritise human security.

The doubling of Britain's military budget is partly justified in terms of the public having enjoyed a post-Cold War "peace dividend". The reality is that when the increase was announced the budget was already higher in real terms than it was in the 1980s. - @KhemRogaly

As pressure builds for a massive expansion of the military budget — again at the expense of essential climate programmes — I spoke to @poltheoryother about the realities of Britain’s military spending 👇
📢 💥NEW EPISODE 📢 💥 - @KhemRogaly of @TransitionSec joins PTO to talk about the doubling Britain's military budget amidst an ever increasing drumbeat of commentary predicting a major European war. Link in the 🧵

"the US, NATO and their global allies account for four fifths of the world’s military expenditure. Even excluding the US, the rest of NATO spends almost as much as all states not aligned with the US combined." - @TransitionSec

You're being told the British army is on its knees.
You're told we need to slash social support to pay for huge defence hikes.
It's a lie.

In the UK, there's apparently no money to fix crumbling public services, build housing or invest in climate action. But somehow there's money to double the military budget to project force around the world, even when it does little to make anyone safer.
Important new research from @cashmank_ and @KhemRogaly on where UK military spending actually goes.

This is the sort of public intervention we need, from the excellent @TransitionSec - what is “defence” spending for?
Transition Security Project retweeted
The British military wastes billions every year sustaining overseas operations. We don’t need more military spending. We need a new foreign policy.
Our latest report @TransitionSec estimates the costs of Britain’s global military strategy and its overseas deployments.

Listen to @TransitionSec fellow David Wearing discuss our research on Britain’s role in the war in Yemen on @poltheoryother
👇👇👇
"In Yemen you've got Royal Saudi Air Force jets, flown by Saudi pilots, but the pilots are trained by Britain. The bombs are supplied by Britain. The maintenance is supplied by Britain. The jets themselves are British built, and that British support sustains the aerial operations..." - @davidwearing

📣 📣 NEW EPISODE 📣 📣 - @davidwearing on the UK's role in the Saudi-led coalition's devastating air war against Yemen, and why Britain and its arms companies must pay reparations to the people of Yemen:

Excl: 10 union general secretaries including big affiliate Unison have signed an open letter to Andy Burnham calling on his government to end its "military collaboration" with Saudi Arabia amid concerns over the humanitarian crisis in Yemen: politicshome.com/news/articl…
Transition Security Project retweeted
Britain should not collaborate with a military that has killed thousands of civilians and that created a grotesque humanitarian crisis in Yemen.
We shouldn’t collaborate with the Saudi war effort.
I've signed this open letter along with 9 other GSs 👇

"The war in Yemen is escalating again. The UK must end its military support of Saudi Arabia – or it could do to Andy Burnham’s premiership what complicity in the Gaza genocide did to Keir Starmer’s", writes @davidwearing for @zeteouk

🔴 BREAKING: Report reveals the UK should pay reparations to Yemen
The report released by @CAATuk & @TransitionSec today calculates £7.8bn could be raised through a windfall tax on British arms companies that armed Saudi Arabia, matched by government

BREAKING: The UK government approved nearly £465 million in weapons export licences to Saudi Arabia in the first 3 months of this year.
The vast majority of this is made up of air-to-surface weapons.

The post-war conversion of the publicly-owned Finmeccanica and its privatisation-militarisation (from the 1990s) into Leonardo, in a chart 👇
From my essay for @TransitionSec / @Cmmonwealth:

Finmeccanica used to make trains, electronics, energy technologies and machinery.
Its privatisation and militarisation into Leonardo foreshadows the economic disaster awaiting a Europe that is rearming its industry.
More in the essay I wrote for @TransitionSec/@Cmmonwealth 👇
NEW: European NATO members are set to raise military and security spending to 5% of GDP by 2035.
@S_Gasperin tells the four-decade cautionary tale of the Italian arms company Leonardo and explores the economic risks of European rearmament 🧵

@KhemRogaly from @TransitionSec debunks the claim that military spending produces jobs and growth.

🚨NEW🚨: Ten unions call for Andy Burnham to oppose the war on Iran & stop British bases being used to launch US air strikes.
The unions argue that the “devastating, illegal war” is a catastrophe for the Middle East & that it directly undermines Burnham’s cost of living agenda.
Transition Security Project retweeted
Proud to be one of 10 unions signing this.
Revoking permission for US use of UK bases would have a significant impact on the US’s ability to further escalate a war that has been a catastrophic for the Middle East and an economic disaster worldwide.
