One of my bugbears with all the ‘Rail Staff Awards’ nonsense is that it’s a largely a junket for the back office to give themselves a pat on the back for doing their jobs. Yet on the ground, the basics continue to fail, day in, day out.

Today we've rejected proposals for additional services on the West Coast Main Line after our assessment found they would likely increase delays and cancelled trains for passengers.
We've also approved one existing Avanti service to carry passengers.

ALT Stephanie Tobyn, ORR’s director of strategy, policy and reform: “New services, destinations and greater choice can bring real benefits for passengers and communities. But the West Coast Main Line is already under significant pressure, with performance reflecting limited resilience on a heavily used part of the rail network. “Our detailed analysis has shown that adding more trains to the current timetable would reduce the ability to recover when disruption occurs, increasing the risk of delays spreading and making reliability of the network worse for all passengers.”

Re-reading the interim RAIB report on the Elstow (Bedford) incident and find these paragraphs a concern that neither person in the cab recognised the alarm.
I find this both strange and concerning.

Strike action called at Chiltern against driver-only operation
RAIL union RMT announced strike action today (September 29) on Chiltern Railways after members voted overwhelmingly for industrial action against driver-only operation (DOO) planned for East West Rail services.
RMT members will take 24-hour action on Saturday October 10 and Saturday October 17 after the company refused to provide guarantees over the safety critical role of the second person on board proposed East West Rail services.
RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said that the driver-only operation proposed on East-West represented a significant risk to safety and the current Train Manager roles.
“The actions of Chiltern management to not take these concerns seriously is totally unacceptable.
“RMT will not accept the watering down of safety on the rail network,” he said.
The union remains available for meaningful talks with the company.

The Chiltern strike dates of 10 and 17 October are significant, as the West Coast Main Line has a block from Birmingham to just north of Milton Keynes. So Chiltern will be rammed and, obviously, have to run with a guard north of Banbury. flic.kr/p/2rrW55f
