My latest for @TheHubCanada Alberta is testing the boundary from owning resources to developing them. This has manifested in its various royalty-in-kind programs; equity stakes in pipelines and refineries; and even the floating of a Crown corporation to build and own natural gas pipelines, albeit later dismissed. I don’t think Alberta has yet crossed a line. But what is a conservative government if not one that participates in the market reluctantly, and with regret, and with a clear exit strategy? What we are seeing instead is a government that seems to be seeking opportunities to become a market participant, keeping its options open and numerous, and making deals that could otherwise be left to firms. There is a place for market interventionism in some extenuating circumstances. I won’t suggest otherwise. But the political culture in Alberta is such that it should be practiced as a last resort, not a first resort. thehub.ca/2026/10/19/is-albe…

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.

Today in Wainwright with @dckurek, I met with Mayor Bruce Pugh, Fire Chief Aime Smyl, Deputy Fire Chief Wade Pillman, MLA Garth Rowswell and Reeve Mike Wildeboer of the MD of Wainwright to hear directly from the people leading this community through the tragedy at CFB Wainwright. Our hearts are with the families of the service members we lost, and with everyone injured and still fighting for their lives. These are men and women who put on the uniform to protect our country. Their families deserve our prayers and our support. To the firefighters, paramedics, nurses, doctors and soldiers who ran toward the fire and worked through the night: thank you. Wainwright and its base have always been critically interlinked. In the worst of moments, this community showed exactly who it is. Conservatives will stand with Wainwright, our troops, and their families for as long as it takes.

Behind VTN’s programs are people who understand this work from the inside and are devoted to veterans and their loved ones. Discover our team, in their own words. Different roles, one mission: making sure no veteran faces transition alone. #neveralone

When a politician wants to "move beyond" measuring outputs, I suggest we move beyond believing their promises. Beyond voting for them.
Inquiry of Ministry: “Has the government established annual or multi-year targets for @BuildCanHomes?” Answer: “The framework is designed to move beyond measuring outputs such as housing counts.” @HICC_ca @jacobmantle @CMHC_ca

Object permanence is the understanding that things continue to exist, even when they can’t be seen. And it’s not an understanding your baby comes equipped with. Indeed, during the earliest months of life, if you remove a toy - for example - from your baby’s line of sight you’ll find they react as if it was never there in the first place. In this case, out of sight means out of mind. But that all begins to change, typically between 7-10 months. This little guy - shared to IG by AFVofficial - has a clear sense of object permanence and shows us in two ways: First with his astonishment over dad’s sleight of hand and then with his efforts to track - and seek out - the ball as it moves into dad’s other hand. What a fantastic illustration of his developmental milestone.

<But democracy requires more than the right to vote every few years. It requires citizens willing to question authority, demand evidence, and reject political double standards. I don’t care whether it’s Liberal, Conservative, or NDP. Apply the same standards to everyone.>
George Orwell Would Have a Field Day in Canada Today George Orwell understood something politicians would rather we forget: control the language and you can influence how people think. Look at Canadian politics. Borrowed money becomes an “investment.” More government spending becomes “compassion.” Preferential treatment becomes “equity.” Political disagreement becomes “division.” Unpopular opinions become “misinformation.” Government failures become excuses for expanding government authority. And when citizens question the official narrative, too often the response is to attack their motives rather than answer their arguments. Orwell warned us about political language designed to conceal reality rather than explain it. Our media should be challenging that language, especially publicly funded broadcasters such as the CBC. Journalism should hold government accountable, regardless of which party holds power. Canada is not Orwell’s 1984. We still have democratic elections, independent courts, and freedom to criticize our government. Those distinctions matter. But democracy requires more than the right to vote every few years. It requires citizens willing to question authority, demand evidence, and reject political double standards. I don’t care whether it’s Liberal, Conservative, or NDP. Apply the same standards to everyone. Orwell’s lesson is simple: When politicians change the meaning of words, citizens need to pay closer attention to the facts. A government that cannot defend its policies without manipulating language deserves more scrutiny, not more trust. Think for yourself. Question authority. Demand evidence. That’s how you keep a free country free.

On October 6, in Saint-Hyacinthe, Annie Bonin, a graduate of the Veterans Transition Network programs and a VTN peer supporter, launched her book. Marion Turmine, Manager of Operations for Quebec, was very proud to attend this wonderful evening. Lieutenant-Colonel Éric Beaudoin, Commanding Officer of the 6th Battalion, Royal 22e Régiment, also delivered the opening speech, a very moving one. Thank you to everyone who came to meet her and show their support. Congratulations, Annie!

There is no step-by-step guide for building a deep tech company, but sharing lessons learned can make the journey clearer for everyone. 💡 This week at #EdmontonStartupWeek, our Co-Founder & CTO, Dr. John P. Davis, took the stage at @EdmontonUnltd for the "Building Deep Tech Companies" panel. Alongside fellow founders and ecosystem leaders, Dr. Ryan Tucker of @G2VOptics and Jalene Anderson-Baron of @futurefieldsHQ, John shared real-world insights on what it takes to bring breakthrough research out of the lab and scale a deep-tech company from right here in Alberta. A big thank you to moderator Tiffany Linke-Boyko of @flyingfishvc! Events like this create valuable spaces for founders, innovators, and big thinkers to come together, exchange wisdom, and empower the next generation of entrepreneurs.🔬 #DeepTech #EdmontonStartupWeek #YEGtech #ColderForLonger #QuantumComputing #Cryogenics #ZeroPointCryogenics #ZPC #MadeInCanada
