India's Skyroot Aerospace has joined the elite league of private companies with orbital launch capability, a club previously dominated by the US and China.
The Indian space-tech startup successfully test-launched a low-orbit rocket carrying a 350-kilogram payload. This achievement makes Skyroot the first Indian private firm to reach orbit, signaling its entry into the global satellite launch market.
Skyroot plans commercial operations by 2027, aiming for "one flight every month" after one more test. Co-founder Naga Bharath Daka claims it will be "the most cost-competitive launch vehicle" in the small payload segment, building on India's history of low-cost space missions.
Competing against US firms like Rocket Lab and several Chinese private companies in the sub-1,000 kg market, Skyroot offers "orbit-on-demand taxi" services, solving critical bottlenecks for smaller satellites. While Indian space startups historically face funding challenges, Skyroot's backing by BlackRock and GIC indicates growing investor confidence in its disruptive potential. This entry significantly redefines the global commercial space launch landscape and bolsters India's strategic footprint.

A colossal 10,000-km-long rain cloud has been captured by satellite imagery, stretching from north India across the Himalayas, China, and all the way to South Korea. This vast monsoon convergence zone marks one of the 2026 southwest monsoon's most active phases.
This remarkable weather setup has brought exceptional rainfall to India, with the country recording 170-180% of its normal daily monsoon rainfall in the last two days – the wettest period of the season so far. This spell is expected to significantly improve seasonal rainfall figures, replenishing reservoirs and supporting the crucial kharif cropping season after earlier deficits.
However, the intense activity also brings risks. Authorities have issued warnings for flash floods, waterlogging, landslides, and river swelling, particularly in the vulnerable Himalayan states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, as heavy rain is forecast to continue.
The extraordinary cloud band highlights the deep interconnectedness of Asia's weather systems. While India's monsoon is often seen regionally, this imagery shows it as part of a much larger atmospheric circulation influencing the entire continent. For India, a robust monsoon is critical for agricultural output and economic stability, underpinning its regional resilience.

As global supply chains fracture and West Asian tensions disrupt recovery, India stands out, sustaining strong economic momentum through June. 🇮🇳
According to the RBI's latest Bulletin, India remains one of the fastest-growing major economies, buoyed by robust industrial and services sectors. External trade is gaining traction from new agreements like the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, while foreign investments signal renewed confidence.
This resilience comes amidst a "tumultuous phase" for the world economy, marked by "high uncertainty," disrupted supply chains, and fragmented trade, per RBI. The recent collapse of West Asia ceasefire talks has reversed fragile global recoveries and pushed trade/inflation risks back into uncertainty.
Despite the downside risks to global growth from renewed tensions and persistent inflation, India's steady activity and improving external indicators demonstrate remarkable resilience. This sustained growth underpins India's rising influence in a fragmented global economic order.

A landmark US-Saudi nuclear deal, reportedly allowing Riyadh to enrich uranium on its soil, marks a potential first for US non-proliferation policy. The US Energy Department describes it as a "peaceful nuclear co-operation agreement" including a bilateral safeguards deal.
If the enrichment provision, which US media have reported, is confirmed, experts warn it risks nuclear proliferation in an unstable Middle East. This concern is heightened by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's 2018 statement: "without a doubt if Iran developed a nuclear bomb, we will follow suit as soon as possible."
The deal, which US media report appears to have dropped the US demand for Saudi recognition of Israel, comes amidst escalating US-Iran tensions and a reported Houthi "maritime blockade" against the Kingdom. It now heads to Congress for review, where opposition is expected despite President Donald Trump's Republican Party controlling both chambers.
This agreement could significantly reshape Middle East power dynamics, intensifying the regional arms race and influencing global energy security.

Over 2,500 youths have been detained across Kashmir following the fatal shooting of a policeman on Amarnath Yatra duty in Anantnag. Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi was killed in what marks the first militant attack in the Valley since last year's Pahalgam incident.
The extensive crackdown by J&K Police includes detentions of over 700 individuals in Srinagar alone, described as "suspects" and alleged "overground workers" (OGWs).
Police officials state these actions are a "preventive and pro-active security measure" aimed at identifying networks providing logistical, financial, and other support to terrorist organisations. A search operation for the attackers is underway.
Lt Governor Manoj Sinha condemned the "heinous act," vowing that those responsible would be brought to justice. The attack comes amidst heightened security arrangements for the Amarnath Yatra.
