When a horrified mother realized her 2-week-old son had stopped breathing, she called 911. Our @NYPD68Pct officers rushed over to the location and administered CPR to the baby while waiting for EMS. After a visit to the hospital, the baby is now back home in good health.

Shortly after midnight on February 27, 1975, the FDNY was called to the New York Telephone Building in Manhattan after a company employee noticed smoke on the first floor. 50 years later, this fire is still remembered for its toxic impact on FDNY members and the neighborhood.   “This was the beginning of one of the most difficult fires that has ever confronted the New York City Fire Department. Before this fire would be declared under control, more than 16 hours later, over 700 firefighters from 72 units would operate at this blaze,” then Deputy Chiefs Roger Rodriguez and Elmer Chapman in a 1975 article about the operation. “The suppression of this fire was made very difficult by the heavy toxic smoke which reduced vision to inches and dictated the use of masks even for street operations. Another factor was the maze-like floor layouts and the ability of the frames to contain the beat during the fire, and after the fire was extinguished. Stripped of their insulation, the banks of wire glowed and radiated heat like a giant toaster – a toaster with an area of close to 30,000 square feet on each floor.”   More than 235 members were injured. Years later, many members developed long term health effects and cancer from the fire and exposure to the toxins it produced.

Traffic is down. Transit ridership is up. Funding for the MTA is up. In just the first month, it’s clear: Congestion pricing is working.

QUEEN HOCUL. Business up! Traffic down! Mass transit up! Injuries down! Money for shit, up! Accidents down! I’m sure there’s a couple amendments that can be made for certain cars that shouldn’t be subject to the fee but otherwise this shit is effective every way.

Astoria the Wild Turkey poses for her closeup on Main Street, Roosevelt Island. She seems to enjoy walking this street in the evening, where residents often greet her and take photos, even though foraging opportunities are sparse. 🦃 ❤️

"Babe Ruth came up again in the ninth. I was a little mad. I told my catcher, Tommy Padden, Ruth was not good enough to hit my fastball. I came through with a fastball for strike one. I missed with the second. Next pitch I nodded to Tommy. I was going to throw the ball past Mr. Ruth. It was on the outside corner. That big joker hit it clear out of the park for his third home run of the game. It was the longest homer I'd ever seen in baseball. As he went around third, Ruth gave me the hand sign meaning 'to hell with you.' He was better than me. He was the best that ever lived" Pitcher Guy Bush Pittsburgh Pirates, Forbes Field, 1935

Yesterday was one of the darkest days in memory for the Department, as we experienced the tragedy of two separate line-of-duty deaths.   We mourn the loss of Sanitation Worker Nelvern Samuel, who died from a medical issue while at work at Queens Garage 4. He joined DSNY as a Sanitation Enforcement Agent in 2014, becoming a Sanitation Worker in August 2023.   We mourn the loss of Sanitation Worker Michael Biuso, who died from a medical issue while working his route on Staten Island after more than 24 years on the job.   These men chose to dedicate their lives to serving our City, and New York’s Strongest will stand shoulder to shoulder with their families as they navigate the days, months, and years ahead. They will never be forgotten.

Meet the flying duck orchid! Found in Australian woodlands, it’s named for its resemblance to a duck in flight. Each flower has a long red labellum that attracts, and then traps, pollinating insects. These insects are coated in pollen before being released.
