📢I’m happy to share that my paper is out in Population and Development Review.😀Central and Eastern Europe’s population change isn’t just about fertility, mortality, and migration — the age structure also played a key role in shaping the region’s demographic trajectory.

Budapest’s total fertility rate fell below one child per woman, reaching just 0.98 in 2025, compared with Hungary’s national average of 1.31. Even the county with the highest total fertility rate remained below 1.7.

Europe’s abortion rates fell and converged over recent decades despite differing institutions and social norms. Declines were largest in Eastern Europe and among women with children. That convergence now appears to be ending: since 2021, rates have surged in several European countries.
Our new working paper with @MorvaiSzabo, @adameczanna, @flvcav, @jessica_nisen, @sljitka, @SofiaTromm is out!

Low fertility accounts for half of population ageing in Central and Eastern Europe between 1990 and 2025. The region’s mean age climbed from 35 to 43 years, with initial age structure contributing more than mortality improvements and migration combined. My new working paper is out!

Life expectancy in Hungary has roughly doubled since 1900. The greatest gains occurred between 1925 and 1950, while progress was slowest between 1975 and 2000.

US life expectancy has barely changed over the past decade, remaining at around 79 years. Major progress against cancer was almost entirely wiped out by rising mortality from external causes. A decade of medical progress—but virtually no overall gain in longevity.

The land of tiramisu has the lowest obesity rate in Europe. You know what that means!
Between 1990 and 2020, Hungary’s population fell by 6%, while Czechia and Slovakia grew and Poland remained stable. Fertility, mortality and migration cannot explain the gap. The key difference: Hungary entered the 1990s with a much older population. Initial age structure matters.

Women reach age 45 with an average of more than 2 children in France and Ireland—but only 1.35 in Spain and 1.44 in Italy. Not a single EU country reaches the replacement level of around 2.1.

Sweden's unprecedented fertility decline is driven by the missing first child. Not fewer second kids. Not fewer third kids. Not fewer couples. The drop is entirely in first births, as childless people simply aren't taking the step to parenthood.

Hungary’s migration balance has recently fallen to nearly zero, further accelerating population decline. This was driven mainly by a sharp rise in the emigration of Asian nationals living in Hungary.

Canada’s fertility decline may not simply be about people having fewer children than they want.
Fertility intentions themselves are falling. Strikingly, around half of young women now enter their reproductive years intending to remain childless.

Childlessness among Nordic men has generally increased over recent decades. Finland saw the sharpest rise, from 19% in 1990 to almost 30% in 2024, while Norway reached 27%. Nearly one in three Finnish men is now childless at age 45.

Americans are not simply having fewer children. They increasingly want fewer too.
Desired and actual fertility have historically moved remarkably closely together, with correlations of around 0.9. Now both are falling sharply, suggesting that America’s fertility decline increasingly reflects a fundamental shift toward smaller families.

In the Netherlands and Bosnia and Herzegovina, average male height reaches 184 cm—compared with just 174 cm in Portugal. 🇵🇹
Hungary is a nation of city dwellers: 7 in 10 people lived in urban areas at the beginning of 2025. Yet the regional divide is striking: in one county, the urban share is only slightly above 10%.

Hungary voted in record numbers in 2026. Voter turnout reached 79.6%—nearly four in five eligible voters and 9.4 percentage points higher than in both 2018 and 2022. Participation was strongest in Budapest and western Hungary.

Hungary’s population is ageing, yet the number of deaths fell to a historic low in 2025. This may reflect the pandemic’s mortality displacement (harvesting) effect and/or rising life expectancy.
#demography #Hungary
The freefall in Hungary’s fertility rate may have ended, or at least paused at a very low level. Still, the number of births has fallen by one quarter over the past five years.
