Cyclical probably. Secular I don’t think so. “Higher for longer” until proven otherwise.
I think interest rates have peaked.

In Chicago Violent Crime Pays! City Council just approved $260 million settlement for 16 convicted murderers released from prison —$100 million of which will line the pockets of one Chicago law firm. Not one was required to prove innocence through adversarial court proceeding.    The apparent collusion between the Kim Foxx administration and certain trial lawyers is the greatest taxpayer rip-off in Chicago history. The playbook was remarkably simple:   • Exploit a disgraced detective and challenge decades-old murder convictions.   • Cast the widest possible net by seeking the release of anyone serving a lengthy murder sentence if the detective had even peripheral involvement.   • Eliminate adversarial scrutiny: Foxx declined to contest the convictions being overturned.   • Grease the skids for massive payouts: Foxx's office routinely declined to oppose requests for “certificates of innocence”, paving the way for multimillion-dollar settlements.   The result?   Convicted murderers walk free. Trial lawyers become rich, taxpayers fleeced, and victim’s families are denied justice.   Federal Judge Paul Diamond recently referred Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, and potentially prosecutors under his supervision, for criminal investigation over a similar con involving similar wrongful-conviction practices.   If Philadelphia warrants a federal criminal investigation, Chicago must demand one.

You’re not gonna believe this. 5,000 stocks are down 20%+ from their 52-week highs. And it gets crazier… Nearly 4,000 are down 40%+. Think about what that actually means. While the major indices have held together, underneath the surface thousands of stocks have already been living through their own bear markets. The index looking fine while individual stocks are getting absolutely destroyed underneath it. Some seriously messed up shit when you actually look under the hood.

Nor do they care about the arcane tenant laws that ruin people’s lives because of scammers taking full advantage of loopholes. Come to Chicago and live rent free!!
The U.S. Supreme Court rejected a congressional map in Missouri because politicians gerrymandered it too aggressively, but by every accepted mathematical metric, the map Springfield drew for Illinois is worse. Illinois lawmakers have much to say about "protecting democracy" when it comes to national politics but the map they drew for their own state is statistically more skewed than 99% of all historical redistricting plans nationwide. If elected leaders face zero threat of losing an election, they have no incentive to care about your tax burden. illinoispolicy.org/illinois-…

The deadliest football game in American history ended 0-0. Christmas Eve, 1944. 65 Marines played a pickup game on a field of dirt and coral on Guadalcanal. Six months later, 15 of them were dead. That's the true story this movie is based on, and it's worth knowing before you see it. After Pearl Harbor, college football stars enlisted in huge numbers, and more of them picked the Marines than any other branch. By late 1944 the 4th and 29th Marine Regiments were on Guadalcanal training for the invasion of Okinawa, and between them they had All-Americans, five team captains, and close to 20 guys who were either drafted by or went on to play in the NFL. The game itself started as trash talk over beers. Guys from the 29th said they'd kick the 4th's ass if the two regiments ever played. So on December 24 they actually played, wearing T-shirts and cut-off dungarees with numbers stenciled on the front. Around 1,500 Marines stood around the field watching, and the radio broadcast went out to bases all over the Pacific. Three hours of football, a brawl or two, and nobody scored. Then they shipped out to Okinawa, the bloodiest battle of the Pacific. 82 days of fighting that killed over 240,000 people. The casualty rate in those two regiments went past 50%. Tony Butkovich led the nation in rushing at Purdue in 1943 and went #11 overall in the NFL draft. A sniper killed him that April. He was 24. Dave Schreiner, Wisconsin's two-time All-American, had been the #11 pick the year before. A sniper got him too, one day before the island was declared secure. He was the 15th and last player from the game to die there. No single battle has ever killed more American athletes. Buzz Bissinger spent years researching all 65 of these guys for the book this comes from. He wrote Friday Night Lights, and Peter Berg directed that movie too. Those two have spent 20 years turning football into stories about way more than football, so this one ended up in the right hands.
From Peter Berg, starring Nicholas Galitzine, Bill Skarsgård, Ray Nicholson, and Tom Francis. THE MOSQUITO BOWL is in theaters October 30. Get tickets now. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, four of America’s top College Football stars set their fame aside to enlist in the Marines. They’ll play in a legendary game that, for many, will be their last.

Not to mention hurting legit owners where people have learned to “game” the system. Folks living rent free in high end buildings because it will take 3-6 months to get them out. 1 step forward 3 steps backwards
.@ChicagosMayor's revised "Protecting Renters Ordinance" still includes way too many hidden costs that will inevitably make Chicago's housing affordability crisis much worse. The updated version of the ordinance still would ban move-in fees, cap application fees, and force landlords to pay annual per-unit registry taxes, each of which would require landlords to raise baseline monthly rents in order to cover new regulatory costs on top of repair risks. illinoispolicy.org/chicago-p…

OpenAI just got a problem no better model can fix. For $8 a month, Elon now sells his AI, an AI coding editor, and X Premium on one bill. Microsoft ran this exact play in 1995 and erased an 80% market leader in four years without ever building the better browser. The victim was Netscape. It owned the browser market, Microsoft made Internet Explorer free with every copy of Windows, and by 1999 Netscape was selling itself to AOL. Nobody ever found a counter to it. Today's version is buried in Cursor's reply, where almost nobody will scroll. Paid plans get twice the coding usage on Grok models, and third-party models move to API pricing "to make room for more Grok usage." Inside the most popular AI coding editor, that means same keystrokes, same tab-complete, one model subsidized by a $1.25 trillion parent while every rival bills at raw list price. Cursor spent three years becoming the biggest storefront for other labs' coding models. SpaceX bought the storefront in August and just repriced everyone else's shelf space. Look at how fast this came together. February, SpaceX absorbs xAI at a $250 billion valuation. August, it buys Cursor. October, the rename to Superintelligence and one subscription covering the model, the editor, the social network, and your blue check. Eight months, start to finish. Bundles win because the extra product feels free. A developer already paying $30 for X plus chat plus coding has to actively talk himself into sending another lab $20 a month on top. Teams passed Slack in daily users within two years of launch for one reason. It rode a bill companies were already paying. Netscape's browser was better than IE for most of that fight. Ask anyone under 30 if they've ever heard of it.
We've unified plans across Grok, Cursor, and X Premium. Introducing The X Subscription.

Credit card balances in serious delinquency of 90 days or more past due has surged to 13%. This is the worst delinquency rate seen since peak distress in the Great Recession of 2008. 1 in 10 Americans are now in default on their credit card loans.
Despite Trump's claims that the American economy is booming, the U.S. trade balance has been collapsing. For August it came in at -$105 billion. Initial tariffs gains have been totally wiped out. The last time we saw a collapse like this was after Trump won the 2024 election.

.@GovPritzker has enacted 63 combined tax and fee hikes since taking office, which has cost Illinois taxpayers an additional $85.6 billion under his administration. The economic fallout: $35 billion in personal income has left the state, and real wages have grown by an average 0% for Illinois workers since 2018.
