ALT ON IMAGE “Most of the time, I meditate on the opposite wall.”— Sylvia Plath, ‘Mirror’ How I was taught—give face, say little like a Buddhist, though I’ve no real faith. Just myself to blame—wrong house. Wrong mirror. Too soon, they pass up the pine stairway —daring to look only once. See? Unbearable just being Beloved. Hearing your name called from another room blank of sugar. To hook your beauty. Then fly out of this frame. One wing says to its other: I need. You too. The exotic bird repeats against glass—becomes greener than its throat. Vikki C.

ALT poem I prefer funerals where they lob a blanket over the full length hall mirror, so I don’t feel drawn into checking my hair's behavior. I’d get stuck there, patting down wayward strands, lamenting my appearance more than the loss of a friend. It’s not vanity.I’m just obsessed with looking good for the dead, since catching the hot ghost on the landing spying on me as I undressed for bed. Daniel Duggan

ALT Lourdes, France: For A Young Child The grotto, a near-empty eye-socket, suspended wooden sticks and crutches are redundant framing-lashes; most focus on the specular-highlight: the benignly hovering statue of Mary, but being just a frightened child, this worshipped rock fissure feels prised-open horror gushing crudely from the earth’s bowels; bobbing amid a flood of turbulent-prayers and foamy-forceful-whispers; below these jostling waves of surface ecstasy: a crowd’s deeper fear is sensed and like the cave’s remembered chill, it enters forever my all-absorbing, still developing, bones. Julian Cason

ALT The Pool's Eye is cloudy. Sky rains eye drops to numb the eye completely widen (dilate) its pupil. Pool is awake, it does not feel pain. Sky makes a tiny, self-sealing cut in the pool's cornea. Breaks up the lens, inserts gently a needle-thin ultrasound probe of birdsong , gently breaks up the cloudy lens into small pieces. Fragments suctioned out through gust leaving the thin outer lens in place. More sky drops unfold as its new lens. The tiny cut heals by itself. Its vision blurry scratchy. A few days completes healing. before the other eye clouds.
