This may be controversial: The goal isn’t to be disciplined. The goal is to have a high Return on Discipline.
Being disciplined around things that don’t provide any return in the form of life outcomes isn’t something to celebrate.
If you have limited energy, you want to use those discipline points on the things that actually matter. The things that have a high return on that discipline.
And Return on Discipline is entirely individual. The ROD of a specific action will vary by person based on their life and goals.
Things that have low return on discipline (for me):
- Making the bed
- No tv before bed
- Seated meditation
I’ve tried all of them for extended periods and never felt the benefit. They just spent my discipline points on things that didn’t really move the needle in my life.
Things that have a high return on discipline (for me):
- 4:30am wake up
- Daily hard fitness
- No phone periods during day
The point is that you want to choose your discipline wisely.
Don’t accept someone else’s version as your own. Experiment, test, kill, and keep according to what you find.
Be disciplined, but on things that matter in your life.
Have a high Return on Discipline.

Imagine you snap your fingers and every single dream you’ve ever wanted comes true.
Eventually, you’d think of something *else* to want, including not having everything…and be back to square one.

I'm convinced the most important thing you can do is build momentum early in the day. One small win in the morning creates energy that compounds. Do one hard thing. One quick workout. One finished task. Whatever. Great days are built on tiny wins. Small things become big things.

Father, teach this to your kids.
Don't subscribe to someone else's definition of fun. If your idea of a great Friday night is reading, building, lifting, writing, taking a walk, or having a deep conversation, that's your fun. Don't let other define fun.
You do you!

Stand tall. Dont crack. Endure. You can die tomorrow. Today you do the only thing you can do. You fight. You rage on. You do what you came to do. You finish what you started. No matter how much it costs. How long it takes. Or how much it hurts. Because you said you would.

Being curious and excited can take you far, especially over the long arc of a life. The person who is a voracious lifelong learner will figure it out eventually. A strong reader with a healthy dose of curiosity and a willingness to try things is hard to stop.

A lot of life advice just comes down to this: Do uncomfortable things sooner. The delayed conversation gets harder. The ignored problem expands. The minor repair becomes a major one. Peace isn't found through avoidance. The calm life is earned through early action.

I'm convinced the ability to smile through chaos is a legitimate competitive advantage. It's a rare trait. When most people get tight, a few get loose. They thrive on it. They actually enjoy it. I'd never bet against the person smiling like a psycho as they enter the storm.

2 things I noticed with the highest achievers in the world:
1. They exercise
2. They walk a lot
3. They never complain
These are non-negotiables when you’ve got a high workload and big goals.

I'm convinced that real success is often quiet. It's spending less than you make. Driving the simple car. Wearing what you like. Loving the same person forever. Showing up for friends. Avoiding drama. Doing hard things. Real success doesn't shout. Quiet is seriously underrated.
