The details can wait. —Tony Seruga When a Democrat files a bill in October of an election year, read the press release. You can ignore the legislative text. They’re sending a message to the base. Not writing laws. Rep. Delia Ramirez, a Chicago Democrat who calls herself “a proud anchor baby,” is running the play again. Her bill is called the Reimagining Safety Act. She announced it in Chicago in September and filed it this week, right on cue. The broad brush strokes are bold… - Immigration and Customs Enforcement gets abolished. - Customs and Border Protection gets abolished, which means Border Patrol disappears. - The whole Department of Homeland Security gets “dismantled,” the 2002 law that built it gets repealed, and a shiny new cabinet shop called the Department of Community Safety moves into the building. Reps. Rashida Tlaib, Adelita Grijalva, and Jim McGovern signed on as original cosponsors. The Chicago chapter of CAIR endorsed it. Forty-odd left-leaning groups are on the letterhead. Then you ask what the new department actually does, and the answers get evasive. Ramirez’s own press release billed this as a “first-of-its-kind bill” and then more or less shrugs. Nobody explained how the agency gets staffed… what it costs, who runs it… or how it screens the millions of people who land at airports… dock at seaports… and walk across land crossings every year.
