Great defenders have a process, they have a way to separate themselves from a lot of good infielders. It’s the game inside of a game. It’s taking your focus even deeper than just playing and making the plays. Thread 🧵⬇️

All of this comes down to timing, being on time every pitch, another sport to watch with timing is tennis and the serve and pay attention to the guy that is returning the serve, watch his timing, watch him be in sync with his movements to the servers routine.

Understand if you want to be a really good defender and separate yourselves more than just fielding a ground ball, but the process it takes before fielding the ground ball. Watch how ahead of the curve you are when you dive deeper into pre pitch preparation and timing.

MIF DP footwork around the bag: Drill set is about athleticism, adjustability, staying calm is chaos, arm stroke and active footwork.

Forehand or backhand, I’m big on the ball staying glove side eye. Emphasizing this helps keep the glove out front.

Avoid getting flat, cut the angle right at the ball.

No outs, grounder to 3B. PCA drifts down the line equidistant with the fielder's distance from the bag and stares him down — coiled to score the instant a throw goes to 1B. So it doesn't. The standoff takes the out away. This is how a runner should play it, even if only a bluff.

Most important thing is watch his eyes after his first couple steps. On the ball, picks up the direction of the ball hit and knows he's got extra bases ahead of him.

Put it together, one continuous move from secondary to first step with momentum, eyes up find the ball, tight turns, back door slide. Good base-running gives you opportunity and chances to win games
