Despite being a climate summit, COP is often held in countries that are putting their foot on the accelerator of environmental collapse.
Last year's COP was held in Dubai, and climate scientist @TomWoodScience was shocked by the gap between rhetoric and reality.

Important new study shows that current climate models underestimate the human-caused slowing of the #AMOC (Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation), because they neglect freshwater influx from Greenland melt and other sources. /1

How will we explain to our children and grandchildren that unfortunately, we couldn’t leave them a livable planet because a few petro-states vetoed phasing out fossil fuels?

The protestor is @LicypriyaK, a 12-year old activist from India. She has been de-badged and kicked out of #COP28. What a hero 👏 I hope she knows her actions were appreciated and fully supported by a great number of us here ✊

RCP8.5-like scenarios are very unlikely this century, but useful to model:
✅ Calibrating damage functions
✅ Assessing post-2100 climate and sea level rise
✅ Implications of strong carbon cycle feedbacks
✅ Line of sight to CMIP5&6

I ran the numbers on the #NordStream methane leak and thankfully the climate impact is small: median additional warming of 0.000016°C that peaks by 2030

Full day of IPCC interviews yesterday (🙏 to the journalists & the incomparable @AichaBesser_IMD of @ClimactSuisse who coordinated it all).
The question I was asked most often: "Scientists have been raising the alarm for so long, and no one does anything. Why another report?"

The final sentence of new IPCC report:
"The scientific evidence is unequivocal: climate change is a threat to human well-being and the health of the planet.
Any further delay in concerted global action will miss a brief and rapidly closing window to secure a liveable future."

Today we celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science! Here's to our past (& future!) guests, who inspire us with their work in the field of climate science
Still today, less than 30% of the world's researchers are women

One week left to submit abstracts!
If you are working on how climate affects energy, land-use, population, economy, or anything else that affects humans, and think it's important to capture these effects in the next generation of emissions scenarios, we want you!

The latest IPCC report is hot off the press.
@sachinj95 from @ICASLeeds writes about climate sensitivity, a very relevant and key concept to understand how the climate system reacts to our greenhouse gas emissions.

I’m not going to talk too much about the critical messages of the #IPCC Sixth Assessment Report: others will do it far more eloquently than me.
I’ll focus on some numbers that reflect my own small contribution.
