THREAD: Paul Okon-Engstler to FC Köln
After a top A-League season and a breakout World Cup, highlighted by a great performance vs. Turkey, Sydney FC defensive midfielder Paul Okon-Engstler has earned a move to Bundesliga club FC Köln.
But what type of player is Okon-Engstler?
I believe pens are built on strategy rather than luck. It wasn’t luck when everyone eulogised Arnie and Redmayne v Peru.
My theory is that Popa galaxy-brained and picked players that Egypt cant gather penalty intel on. That is a flawed strategy rather than luck, in my opinion.
This Argentina v Cape Verde game is absolute box office btw.
At least we’re getting some good World Cup action for the day after the Australia horror show.
This is an actual quote from his press conference btw.
“I trusted Lucas Herrington to start against Paraguay and Egypt, so what’s the difference with taking a penalty,” says Tony Popović.
Confirms that Popović was the one deciding the penalty takers. But also, this absolutely diabolical logic, I’m sorry.
"I felt that if anyone was going to score in extra-time, it was us," says Tony Popović in his press-conference.
I am not sure I agree.
Ajdin Hrustić stepped up and scored for Eintracht Frankfurt during a penalty shootout in a Europa League Final.
Beyond belief that he would not step up himself or willingly step up if called upon. Would love to know the process that decided our penalty selection and strategy.
Also would love a proper journalist to have some respect for their trade and actually ask Popa the hard questions for once.
If he gets irritable and refuses to answer (he often does), push him on it. I swear he used to hate answering my questions when he was at Victory.
Frankly though, we weren’t good enough towards the end of regular time and extra time to win the game.
Egypt created more chances throughout the match and we were fortunate that Beach was in goal. Very disappointing day.
It’s obviously easy with hindsight, but even the decision to sub on Ryan seems bizarre.
Beach is taller, bigger and has more reach while also coming off an unbelievable performance and form in general. Izzo also has experience making big saves in shootouts.
It was so predictable that Souttar was going to smash the ball into Row Z. I’m a big believer of your best option taking the first pen.
Very bizarre if Souttar was the best option. Surely in that situation you expose the players that have been in the situation previously?
Would love to know the logic behind Souttar and Herrington taking pens in the shootout.
Seems to defy all logic for them to take pens and for Okon, Hrustić and Touré not to.
