Spots in heavily subsidized systems are always scarce because paying providers enough to keep enough of them in the system to meet demand would cost way too much. The system only serves people with 9-5 schedules and favors those with the wherewithal to navigate it.
Just now, David Eby confirms that he has his kids in $10/day taxpayer-subsidized daycare. Approx. only 10% of BC daycare spots offer $10/day daycare. Most families who want in can't get a spot. As Premier, Eby earns $227k/year. Eby's wife is a doctor. Their household income is likely well over half a million dollars per year. We don't resent British Columbians who are successful (we want more people to succeed). But where there are wait lists, surely a wealthy family like Eby's shouldn't be taking advantage of $10/day daycare. Think about a working single mother? David Eby deserves the spot more than her?

The function of $10 a day childcare, relative to universal child allowances, is to transfer wealth from families with stay-at-home parents to well-off two-income families. It’s just taxpayers footing the bill for a minority like Eby to enjoy having a cheap servant class again.

On this note, appears to me Latter-day Saints are going through the decline in children per couple and rise in marriage age that the secular culture went through a few decades earlier. But we have not (yet) seen the collapse in pairing off and big rise in never-married people.
The big decline over the last decade is mostly downstream of falling rates of marrying or otherwise pairing off, as opposed to a fall in the number of kids couples want or actually have.

Not obvious to me whether we will or won’t. We certainly seem to follow the culture on a 30-year delay. On the other hand, maybe we will figure out how to resist the dating apps or whatever is causing the crisis in the secular culture.

This MAiD supporter is in favor of removing the part of the criminal code that allows people to stop others from committing suicide. Points for consistency: if you support MAiD for mental illness it’s hard to see why you wouldn’t be.
If the person's suicide isn't endangering others, or causing serious inconvenience, then I'd prohibit that. Arguably if the method that they are using is more likely to maim than to kill, then that might also constitute arguable welfare grounds for intervening. But that shouldn't even be the case if there was a negative liberty right to suicide, which would have to include the freedom to access reliable and humane methods from a willing supplier.

This guy is a psychiatrist who specializes in suicide and also feels strongly that MAiD should be allowed in mental illness cases. Here he’s saying that deciding to MAiD a dementia patient who previously gave a directive to be euthanized but is now fighting it is “not hard”. 1/
If my advance directive says "please give me MAiD when my dementia gets to the level that I'm a burden on my loved ones", them the answer is you give me MAiD, not respond to my delirious protests. If you don't know how to "interrogate delirium or confusion", you shouldn't be a doctor. There is NOTHING HARD about this scenario, except if you don't understand how brains work.

What does this imply for suicidal people? What if somebody who calls the hotline is controlled, not chaotic, and has “rational” I’m-a-burden motivations? Transfer them to the MAiD line? 8/

Anyway, it’s all here in 11 pt Calibri, next to figures spilling over the right margin. Can you imagine having a relative struggling with suicidal thoughts and they end up getting referred to this clown? 9/9 ourcommons.ca/Content/Commit…

Party A (here, parents) has a duty to party B (here, adult children) but it would not be right for party B to enforce the duty. Many duties in relationships work this way. The marital duty another.
You are entitled to exactly ZERO of your parents dollars. You didn’t earn it. It is 100% theirs and they can anything they want with it. If my parents were to die and leave me nothing as an inheritance, I wouldn’t have a single qualm about it. My success and failures are my own to bear. Any assistance that my parents give me beyond my childhood is appreciated greatly, but completely without obligation. This is why caring for widows is a biblical principle, nobody owes those widows anything, but choosing to care for them is a selfless act and very unlikely to be reciprocated. That being said, to make their children better than themselves it is the greatest of all parental pursuits, if financial aid will help do that, by all means.

I underestimated LLMs. When GPT-5 came out last year it looked like they were plateauing. I thought they had squeezed most of what they would be able to out of the data. That wasn’t the case. I did not expect the incredible work being done in math. Part of what I missed is 1/

I doubt computers or LLMs are conscious. We don’t think humans are conscious because we compute; we think we are conscious because each of us happens to experience it. Most of the computation we do is not conscious at all, and it is not clear why some computation would give 8/

rise to consciousness and some would not. It seems more likely to me that our consciousness arises from something bizarre that Turing-machine computation can’t do. But who knows. 9/9
