New paper with @MazzucatoM & Sion Williams-Elyesil: the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine shows public-private partnerships are enhanced by conditionalities that link funding to public value.
Key conditions for success include mission clarity, government capability & trust.
The lessons learned from COVID-19 matter — and can inform outcomes-oriented industrial strategy for the future.
In a new paper, @TomStratton, Sion Williams-Eliyesil and I explore how the development of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine provides a framework for future proactive state intervention, driving public value across sectors.

NEW: Is Britain really a high tax country?
Our collective tax bill is at its highest share of GDP since the 1940s
But actually, the tax and NI paid by the average worker are at their lowest in decades.

The U.K.’s Creative Industries are unique in representing an industrial strength and an essential part of communities’ social fabric. But they need to be nurtured. Sir Nick references Creative Corridors, an initiative involving @theRSAorg and partners, as one example of how.

10/ In the UK, the RSA will continue to work with partners to replicate Professor Chetty’s research with partners (see thersa.org/design-for-life-o…) with a view to building a programme of practical interventions to mirror that in the US.
9/ This will build on the the Opportunity Atlas (opportunityatlas.org/), a tool that allows everyone to engage with Professor Chetty’s research, as well as the great work already taking place in communities.
8/ In the US, look out for @TheRSA_US launching its Social Connections programme next week, which will engage with partners and funders globally with the shared aim of developing practical interventions to nurture these crucial friendships.
7/ Today, the @theRSAorg awarded Professor Chetty the #BenjaminFranklinMedal for the work that led to these astonishing insights. The ceremony also brought together hundreds of practitioners to mark the beginning of an RSA programme of global action.
5/ The research suggests that children growing up in places with a high degree of economic connectedness will enjoy, on average, incomes up to 20% higher than their peers growing up in places with low economic connectedness.
4/ However, the degree to which children from lower income backgrounds are friends with children from higher income backgrounds varies significantly across the US (blue high economic connectedness, red low).
3/ There is very strong evidence that for children of lower income families in the US, friendships with children in higher income groups (what Chetty calls Economic Connectedness) is by far the biggest social factor driving upward income mobility.
2/ Groundbreaking work by economist Professor Raj Chetty and his @OppInsights team shows how children’s social connections impact their earning potential (nature.com/articles/s41586-0…).
The results are extraordinary.
1/ What if the life chances of kids born into low-income households is mostly not about *what* you know but *who* you know?
How might this change the ways in which we nurture social mobile societies?

The backdrop is @thecommonroomgn, which served as a stunning location for the second in this series of workshops to discuss NEMCA’s investment plan. Wonderful energy in the room as participants discussed how to capitalise on the Region’s devolution deal. @h_kippin
