😭 WAYNE SHAW'S PIE-EATING STUNT AGAINST ARSENAL TURNED INTO ONE OF THE MOST BIZARRE CONTROVERSIES IN FA CUP HISTORY.
In February 2017, non-league Sutton United were preparing for one of the biggest nights in their history.
They had somehow made it to the fifth round of the FA Cup, where they were set to face Arsenal.
And among the players on Sutton's bench was an unlikely cult hero: reserve goalkeeper Wayne Shaw, affectionately nicknamed the “Roly Poly Goalie.”
But before the game, a bookmaker sponsoring Sutton came up with a novelty bet.
The odds were 8/1 that Shaw would eat a pie live on television during the match.
Shaw knew about the bet.
The game got underway, and Arsenal eventually took a 2–0 lead. Sutton had used all three substitutes, so Shaw knew he wasn't going to get on the pitch.
Then, towards the end of the match, television cameras caught him standing beside the dugout.
And there he was...
Eating a pie. 😭🥧
Shaw later explained:
“I thought I would give them a bit of banter.”
It looked like a harmless bit of football comedy. The kind of moment that makes the FA Cup special.
Except there was a problem: people had actually placed bets on it.
Shaw denied placing a bet himself, but admitted he believed some friends and supporters may have backed the outcome.
Suddenly, the joke became a serious matter.
The FA and Gambling Commission launched investigations, and within 24 hours of Sutton's biggest game in years, Shaw had resigned from the club.
The consequences didn't end there.
The FA later found that Shaw had intentionally influenced a football betting market. He received a two-month suspension from football and was fined £375.
The betting company behind Sun Bets also faced consequences, with the Gambling Commission eventually imposing an £84,000 fine over its handling of the stunt.
All of this because of a meat-and-potato pie.
What started as a bit of banter ended with Wayne Shaw losing his place at Sutton United and receiving a football ban.
If you haven’t already bought your ticket for Hoffenheim go buy one now. Yes we are on a bad run but Pierre and boys need our backing. The blame is on Parish and Hobbs. #cpfc
1 🔴 card given out of the two tackles. Big clubs get away with so much. Sort it out @premierleague #cpfc
Disappointing performance tonight. 🔴 card changing the game. Next few days we need to learn how to defend corners especially back post. Passing was absolutely shocking. Only highlight was Deano making some impressive saves to keep score down. #CPFC

Fair play to him 👏
If you haven’t already done the tour of Selhurst Park with @fivestarjane I’d highly recommend it. An excellent guide with great knowledge finishing with a photo with our famous 3 trophies. #CPFC
