I’m so thrilled to see this work published. It started as an idea in grad school, continued as my proposal for my post doc, and here we are finally publishing it! 😃
Making 🌊 in #hurricane research! A new NSF NCAR study led by @RosimarWx shows that 2x as many hurricanes form 2 days after the passing of atmospheric Kelvin waves than in the days before. This info will be hugely helpful to forecasters+emergency responders. 🧵
A simplified modeling framework has been developed that captures the essential dynamics during rapid intensification in the presence of evolving asymmetries as seen in the observations from Hurricane Michael (2018). @michaelmbell Learn more here:

We believe APAR will provide a generational leap in our radar capabilities.
Huge thx to our partners: @NOAA, @ColoradoStateU, @stonybrooku, @UofOklahoma + @UMassAmherst
We can't wait to see what our research community will do with this groundbreaking new tool, coming in 2038!

All strong tropical cyclones have tall circulations, but are tall weaker storms more likely to strengthen? A new published study in GRL digs into this question using a large dataset of airborne Doppler radar analyses of tropical cyclones! Read more here: agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.…

The final sounding from Hsin-Chu has been launched for PRECIP! 00 UTC 11 August also marks the end of S-Pol radar operations in Taiwan. Thank you to all who’ve helped us get to this important milestone in our project! Video credit thanks to @NickGoldenWX
We did a coordinated S-Pol RHI scans with a GPM pass today from the CWB @PRECIP2022 and TAHOPE Ops center! Last week of PRECIP! Go PRECIP!

With 10 more days to go, today we coincidentally begun our 10th intense observing period (IOP10). Check out this incredible storm we sampled today ⛈

Did you know that we’re on day 68 of continuous operations? Our instruments have sampled a wide range of precipitation events. We’re gearing up for a potential tropical cyclone event as we near the end of our project.

The double tropical cyclone sandwich around Taiwan was not a scenario I envisioned for @PRECIP2022. The atmosphere never ceases to amaze 🌧

It’s nighttime in Taiwan but S-Pol will continue to operate all night long to capture this ongoing Mei-Yu front rainfall event. Day 2 and the rain keeps coming down! Thanks @ncareol for the great photo
