They Dont Work For You Anyone survive the lean movement? Does anyone realize how much damage that did when they took it off the manufacturing floor and onto the carpet? Lean started as a factory method. Toyota used it to cut wasted steps and keep the people who knew the work. Around 2010 to even now, American buyout firms/ Private Equity and financial firms took the lean movement onto the carpet and upstairs. The engineer, the support lead, the person who had already seen the failure, all got priced as overhead. Overhead is what you cut before you sell the company. This caused intellectual bankruptcy and it was intentional. A plant can fake it for a while on the manufacturing floor. There is a work instruction. The next person follows the sheet. An office cannot. The drawing, the customer call, and the fix live in the people you just removed. The financial folks treated them like factory workers with zero regard for how value they carried to the customer. Nothing looks broken the week they leave. Then the quote slips. The repair is wrong. The new part put in for the absolete one doesnt work. The customer calls the firm that still has a bench. Meanwhile, the offshore teams staffed up. Sometimes 5X the employees were working in far east Asia for every American cut. Foreign owners often kept that bench because they still planned to own the place in ten years. The American version was built to be sold in five. They did not ban innovation. They stopped paying for the people who do it, and called the savings lean. They Dont Work For You.
