Gambling is one thing I’ve flipped on as I got older. I used to laugh off the critics and think of gambling as “a tax on those who can’t do math” but I’ve come to think that’s cruel (and regressive) and paternalism is good here. This paper is another brick in that new wall.
Sports betting legalization reduces net investments of households by nearly 14% overall. $1 of sports betting reduces net investment by over $2, increases credit card debt, but has no effect on participation in lotteries or other online gambling outlets. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.…

I put up a mini-site today at citydensity.com/ to help you compare the world’s cities. You can see how many people live near a city, or use my favourite metric: "population weighted density" to get an accurate measure of how dense a city is to live in.

When you hear NIMBYs complaining about shade in their backyard or having to park further down the street or the preservation of unremarkable suburban buildings, please weigh this against what the housing shortage is doing to renters. Like Mat, from the Inner west:

🇦🇺 Crikey! The hidden fees report on Australian banks was so intriguing I thought I should ask the Aussie twitter to confirm that our team got the math and screenshots right? /1

“Community input,” where the 0.001% of the population who shows up to meetings gets to veto the actions of people elected by over half of it, is just voter suppression with extra steps.

Slovakian sees a video about American suburbs and posts questions to Reddit. The level of bafflement is hilarious and appropriate.

For poor nations, remittances are bigger than foreign investment & twice as big as foreign aid. Yet migrants still pay too much to transfer money to friends & family. It's time the big banks ended the confusopoly & implemented transparent pricing theaustralian.com.au/busines… #auspol

Transferwise, a fintech, no longer needs an intermediary bank to plug into Hungary's core payment plumbing. It just got a direct central bank connection. Why doesn't every central bank allow this? Seems like a no-brainer. Source: portfolio.hu/bank/20200916/h…

➣ 650 million people live on less than $1.90 per day. ➣ 15,000 children die every day (4% of all children). ⬇ A thread on why I think it is a very good idea to donate some of your money to a charity that helps to make progress against big global problems like these.

My Dad found a Kindle. No way to see owner's email. Amazon support no help. Owner had another device in her a/c. He renamed the found device "Call XXX", and moved to "last position" of the book she was reading. She saw prompt, "Would you like to resume from…?" She called him ✅

It’s amazing we can get governments to force scooter companies to put speed limiters on a device that‘s killed fewer than ~ 25 people but not on devices that kill 40,000 each year. Cities’ cowardice in face of car industry will be a part of the shame of our collective history.

DC has new regs which limit the scooters to 10MPH (and which I believe is electronically limited). With current tech I think that's reasonable.
