Suicide doesn’t discriminate; it affects anyone, anywhere, regardless of age, race, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status or mental health history. This is why suicide prevention is everyone’s responsibility. We have a duty to look out for our friends, family, colleagues and even strangers who might be struggling with suicidal thoughts. It’s not enough to assume someone is “fine” or that they’ll “get over it”. We must actively listen support and connect them with resources that can help. One of the most important things we can do is break down the stigma surrounding mental health and suicide. We need to create open and safe spaces for people to discuss their struggles without fear of judgement or shame. By normalising conversations about mental health and suicide, we can encourage people to seek help. It’s also crucial to educate ourselves on the warning signs of suicide and know how to intervene if we suspect someone is at risk. Simple acts of kindness and compassion can make a huge difference to someone who is struggling. Suicide prevention isn’t just the responsibility of mental health professionals or suicide hotlines; it’s a collective effort that requires all of us to be vigilant and proactive in supporting those around us. Let’s come together to break the silence, de-stigmatise mental health and show compassion and empathy to those who need it most. Remember, suicide prevention is everyone’s business 💜 #suicideprevention #mentalhealthawareness

You can’t just ‘snap out of it’ when you have depression and hearing you say that is harmful. It shows you have no understanding and don’t care enough to understand. No matter how hard you try to fight the thoughts, the darkness completely consumes you, feels like no way out.

In March 1976, Joni found solace on the frozen expanse of Lake Mendota, where Joel Bernstein captured the ethereal images that would later be used on ‘Hejira.’
