Koskela is unlikely to be this clueless but many of her voters are and politics is a show so you get these cartoonish takes. Most of what you see in Finnish politics is just recycled and repeated content from abroad, incl. the current billionaire thing. iltalehti.fi/politiikka/a/75…

I remember something like ten or more years ago that the IMF or some rating agency said that Finnish government bonds are safe because they can always raid pension funds to pay. Here we are I guess.

By now the attack on Iran looks even dumber than the attack on Ukraine and that really is a high bar to clear. Good job.
BREAKING: The U.S. is now preparing to completely abandon Gulf countries, as Trump envoy Tom Barrack directly warns Gulf allies that Washington can no longer guarantee their security indefinitely, telling regional officials in Doha that they must take responsibility for their own defense, signalling the end of the U.S. security umbrella in the Middle East, per the Wall Street Journal. Barrack said the 80-year-old U.S. security-for-oil arrangement is no longer sustainable, pointing to regional defense partnerships as the way forward. The warning comes as Gulf states face Iranian strikes on U.S. military infrastructure and growing uncertainty over Washington’s future military commitment to the region.

I can forgive Finns for their obsession with salty liquorice because they also put raspberry into everything.

All history is the history of technological diffusion through various means, episode 18.
“Tesla is like the Whampoa military academy of EVs.” Still one of the best lines I’ve ever read on China tech. Tesla didn’t just have a “catfish” effect on China’s EV industry. Its massive Shanghai Gigafactory had around 20,000 employees in 2023. Tesla trained thousands of Chinese engineers and workers, many of whom went into China’s broader industrial ecosystem and helped to upgrade the capabilities of China’s EV industry.

This is a big theme in Chinese industrial policy discourse, especially the "industrial maximalism" school of thought popularized by Lu Feng. The idea is that a rigid stratification of industries into "low", "middle" and "high" tech is rather harmful and does not really (1/n)
Anyways, the mid end for tech generates the profits to fund the high end. I’ve seen it in medtech and when the profits from that are eaten, there’s less funds for R&D to go around.

Heard once that in Finland most children are born 9 months after December because of the traditional out-of-control, blackout drunk Christmas parties ("pikkujoulu").
Really odd that Christmas Day is the most uncommon birthday.

Always thought of the Multipla as an April fools' joke but the only person who knew died so they put it into production.
Is this the most unexpected revival of the year? The divisive Fiat Multipla is back, and now it's a cross between a pick-up and SUV buff.ly/iaAMYQN

Every five minutes American make up something new about Europe and then squeeze the juice out of their made up stories for weeks or months. Truly the most entrepreneurial people on earth.

re: retiring at 70, the underdiscussed aspect is ageing and performance. Already around 60 you have a substantial amount of people who struggle to keep up. With some you just wait for them to finally retire and make space for someone younger. Stretching it to 70 is bullshit.

You definitely don't want an army of old people sit even longer on their seats. Renewal is largely a demographic of phenomenon. A lot of the dysfunction and extraction we see in the macro is just a result of having too many old and too few young people.

Yes I knew.
DID YOU KNOW? 🇮🇹 Italy is officially the 4th global exporter of manufactured goods, having surpassed 🇯🇵Japan and being behinh only to China 🇨🇳, the USA 🇺🇸 and 🇩🇪Germany. Italy is also EU's 2nd largest industrial power

Felt like I've seen a lot of new Iveco vehicles and it turns out they did indeed increase their sales in Finland and captured market share in an overall declining market.

Pretty wild that in some regions people pay nearly 2100 euros annually just in power transmission fees on top of all the other high taxes and fees. And incomes in Finland are mediocre at bestz especially outside the major cities. yle.fi/a/74-20248692

Turku is apparently the cheapest. Good but now the city is probably getting ideas...

For some perspective, I used to make less than 2100 a month after taxes working three/four shifts in a major export sector (yes, Finnish wages are a joke and employer lobbies are batshit crazy). More than a monthly income just in transmission fees is wild. Good that I lived here.

It's good that new companies have risen and might displace the old ones over time. However imperfect the copying of Silicon Valley social technologies, we're getting new ones. That's not enough. We should have new cities, universities, unions, too, but we have no way there yet.
