Big scoop
NEW: The order to limit a satellite system used by Ukraine for battlefield communications and drone operations came from inside the White House, according to two US officials and a Western official briefed on the matter.

When I say the politics will become increasingly obvious... I mean look at this. If you want to unite the left/centre and split the Tories, without a big spending committment there's no better option.
On the substack this week: I looked at the route back into the EU. It's going to become obvious that the politics works for a manifesto pledge. What are the barriers? What would a negotiation look like? How might another referendum play out? samf.substack.com/p/the-rout…

A Tory-Reform pact would be bad for both parties, too many Tories don’t like Reform and for Reform it would blunt their insurgent edge. In a tactical voting scenario almost as many Tory voters say they’d vote Labour to stop Reform as would vote Reform to stop Labour.
Sky’s @BethRigby reflects on her interview with Kemi Badenoch, in which the Conservative leader admits her party couldn't win an election outright now - but says she'd rather send voters back to the polls than strike a deal with Reform UK. 'Any sort of pact with Reform will alienate all of those potential Conservative voters that want absolutely nothing to do with Nigel Farage,' Badenoch says. 🔗trib.al/QKFOEvK

As Europeans are bracing for Russia’s escalating #hybrid attacks, the #EU has a big role to play. But any confusion or duplication with #NATO risks slowing down decision-making when time is of the essence. My take for @POLITICOEurope @NicholasVinocur politico.eu/article/eu-night…

If Burnham wants to really change the UK EU dynamic he has to primarily do so in Brussels, breaking a 50-odd year taboo. Anything else means incremental progress at best. That's the blunt truth coming from many years of coffees. And the challenge. encompass-europe.com/comment…

Punchy intervention by one of the Lib Dems’ most prominent new MPs:
I listened to Ed Davey on the @BBCr4today this morning, and frankly, I think he missed the point. The idea that we're keeping the triple lock to help millennials is at best for the birds, and at worst downright insulting. I say that as a millennial. The case for the triple lock is a worthy one - stopping pensioner poverty. I want that as much as anyone. But pensioners are now less likely to be in poverty than children or working age adults. We talk about fairness, yet our answer is to give the same increase to every pensioner, treating the one choosing between heating and eating exactly the same as the one with millions in the bank. I can see no moral or fiscal case for above inflation rises for millionaires. That money should go where it's needed most - to everyone in poverty, not just one group. It could help fund free personal care, a policy that would disproportionately benefit older people. Ed is right that we shouldn't pit one generation against another. But intergenerational inequality is already one of the defining injustices of our time, and this would further entrench it. Worse, it gaslights an entire generation into believing it's for our benefit. Telling millennials we're keeping the triple lock to help us in 30 years' time is nonsense. We're on course to be the first generation worse off than our parents. We're locked out of the housing market, paying higher taxes, repaying student loans that never seem to shrink, and putting off having children because of the cost of living. I joined this party because I care about fairness and tackling inequality, and that has to include inequality between generations. This line, and this decision, fails on both counts. Ed needs to think again.
