Lt. Ridge Alkonis is an American hero who deserves better than this.
Heās finally out of his Japanese prison cell, where heās patiently suffered for last 18 months being punished for his involvement in a tragic car accident caused by an unforeseeable medical emergency.
Sadly, he returned to the U.S. today not in triumph, but in handcuffsānot collapsing into the loving arms of family, but thrown into a federal prison in Los Angeles.
Keep in mind that Alkonis:
(1) was in Japan *only* because he was stationed there by the U.S. Navy, in which he has served with great distinction, and
(2) would not have been imprisoned by *any* other civilized nation on earth for his supposed ācrimeāālosing consciousness while driving a car (due to an unforseeable medical emergency), regardless of the extent to which that accident resulted in tragedy.
Not. Even. One.
Perhaps we need to reevaluate our relationship with Japan ā specifically, the terms and conditions that determine how they treat our military personnel ā if this is how they treat our best and brightest, sent by the United States to protect Japan.
In any event, commander in chief should be looking out for him.
As a Navy dad, Iām sure @POTUS would be outraged by the treatment Alkonis has received if Ridge were his son.
For that matter, Iām sure @POTUS would be outraged if he knew what happened to Alkonis.
@POTUS could pardon this man immediatelyāor at least commute his sentenceāto allow him at last to return to his wife and young children.
And he should.
I call upon @POTUS and his staff to make this right.
This isnāt how we treat American heroes.

āLt. Alkonis is now housed in a notorious federal lockup in Los Angeles, and BOP tells us it will take up to 90 days to approve Brittany and the kids to visit him. We believe the BOP can and should release Ridge immediately - it is outrageous he is spending the night in jail. Meantime, it is asinine and cruel to keep the Alkonis kids from seeing their dad for 90 days. Ridgeās kids are 10, 8, and 5, and tonight, their mom has to tell them they canāt see their dad for three months. His kids have suffered enough, and Ridgeās lifetime of service to his country deserves better.ā

Imagine being a Black man or woman. As you open your door in the morning, you realize a White man is being attacked by five Black guys. What would you do? Of course, you would immediately call 911 if it's too dangerous to intervene.
Now, imagine the races were reversed. You're a White man or woman, and as you open your door, you realize five White guys are attacking a Black man. What would you do? Again, of course, you would immediately call 911 if it's too dangerous to intervene.
If that person is Christian, Muslim, Jewish, or anything else, what would you do? Of course, the same thing.
What if the person is Asian, Latino, or Arab? Once more, you would do the exact same thing.
I could cite other examples, but the point I'm making is that most people in the United States would do almost the same thing. They wouldn't even ask whether the person is liberal or conservative; they would just do what they have to do. Politics can wait for another day.
What I'm saying is that on social media, it almost appears as if we are so much different, as if we can no longer talk to one another, tolerate different opinions, races, or religions. But in real life, most people don't really care.
So, go out there, get a cup of coffee, and meet real people from time to time. You would be more tolerant online. May God help us.
