@VU_IVM Water & Climate Risk department day! We explored the interesting Waterloopbos & the beautiful city of Hasselt. We played the carillon, found the local streetart, and had drinks & dinner at a windmill. We had a lot of fun together! #HappyColleagues 😍

A whole year of record breaking ocean temperatures.
This warmth has significant effects on ocean ecosystems. A large fraction of the world’s human population rely on protein from the ocean to live. Disruption to life in the ocean does affect us all.

Only 2-days since #EGU23 ended, and I'm already nostalgic for the amazing PICOs, inspiring talks, and engaging posters... but most of all for the incredible new/old researchers/friends. Always great to be "contaminated" by our passion for studying #drought #floods #multihazards
#EGU23 is a wrap! The @VU_IVM Drought group had fun. We thoroughly enjoyed presenting our research, getting inspired and connecting to old and new science friends. Now #trainfromEGU and back next you for more #drought #sociohydrology #adaptation #compound #risk science!

Had a fantastic traditional Wednesday dinner with colleagues from @VU_IVM at #EGU2023. It's great to meet and learn from fellow scientists, but sharing a meal together truly completes the conference experience. #Networking @EuroGeosciences

What are the drivers of #rainfall variability over #EasternAfrica and what #impact does this have on the land and communities?
Our new paper in @NatRevEarthEnv answers this question! Read more here: nature.com/articles/s43017-0…
Great to work with @paulipalmer and many others on this!

More and more scientists feel the urgency to participate in climate activism due to the worsening climate crisis. IVM scientists @MartheWens and @DebonneNiels express their concerns while participating in non-violent direct action @ Schiphol's private jet terminal.@SR_Netherlands

Not good news for a region already suffering from the impacts of multiple failed rainy seasons over the past years. There are limits to adaptation and coping, especially in a situation of high vulnerability and limited resources.
Below-normal rainfall is expected for March-May in drought-hit Horn of Africa, says @icpac_igad. The risk of an unprecedented sixth poor rainy season will have devastating humanitarian impact in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia.

@TimBusker (also @D2E_Project) says we can learn from Africa where Early-Action Protocols support forecast-based drought preparedness. In NL, we could reduce abstraction in advance, increase IJsselmeer levels, plant different crops. But are drought forecasts good enough? [8/10]

“Even if the March-to-May 2023 rainy season performs well, which forecasts suggest is unlikely, it will take years for impacted communities in the #HornofAfrica to recover from the damage that has already been done over the past two years of drought."

The @VU_IVM drought research group visited Wageningen today! So nice to be discussing our #drought research, finding common interests & methods, and brainstorming future collaboration ideas. Thanks @davidwalker_H2O for organising! And Wageningen in spring is still beautiful. ☀️🌳
