AI is already here; already happening. This viewpoint surrenders the initiative to those who would use it for grandstanding and intellectual / creative shortcuts. Embrace its powers to do the background stuff so you can get on with the important. No point whining. Get on it.

Horrified to learn documentary films do not provide unfiltered access to objective truth. Have any documentary makers wrestled with this question
These days all the dumbest content in my feed is produced by the BBC.
Images appearing to show the Pink Panther rioting in France have gathered millions of views across social media, but they’re actually AI.

Britain’s public service broadcaster doesn’t have a single correspondent in South America because of budget cuts, yet devotes resources to pumping out slop like this every day.
Ben Affleck’s grasp of AI is better than the entire c-suite of Anthropic.
Ben Affleck says AI is simply matrix multiplication, linear algebra and floating point calculations, and however convincingly it sounds like a person, it has nothing to do with thought, humanity or feeling
“Nor do I believe, and I think it’s important to draw the distinction between what AI does, which is simply predict the next token or the next word in a sentence, then add that word on, run it back to the machine, do a lot of computation and pick the next word."
"That is a very different thing than sentience or thought. And I think we need to be really clear about that because it can be convincingly, in an illusory way, sound like thought or like a person."
"But let’s be real clear. This is matrix multiplication. This is linear algebra. These are floating point calculations. It has nothing to do with thought, humanity, or feeling.”
A brilliant interview with an overlooked genius. Howard Barker, Britain's greatest living playwright by some considerable margin.

I've written to Lisa Nandy at DCMS requesting another meeting about Everyone's Art. Progress has stalled. As I wrote in @spectator 80% of our public art is hidden away in storage.

Sanctions on those who break legal restrictions on free speech are necessarily about “breaking the law”. The question is not whether they broke the law. It is whether that law is reasonable and the sanctions justified. In the case of Rooney, the answer is no and no. 2/

Oxford spent millions on a huge new shopping centre and then closed every road except one approaching it. The result? Inevitable chaos.

NEWS: An update on one of the cases from our 2015 Risk List, the Liverpool New Hebrew Congregation Synagogue at Greenbank Drive, Merseyside. Built in 1936-37, architect Sir Ernest Alfred Shennan derived his distinctive language for the synagogue from the Swedish National Romantic style along with Art Deco components. It features a highly unusual reinforced concrete canopied clerestory and a cantilevered segmental curved ladies' gallery, with the materials and craftsmanship employed throughout the building are of the highest quality.
Greenbank Drive closed in 2008 due to the declining Jewish community in the Sefton Park area and a dwindling congregation. The building was upgraded from Grade II to II* listing following an appeal to Historic England to C20 Society, where we argued that it is perhaps the finest surviving synagogue in Europe dating from the Interwar period.
A plan to convert the former synagogue into 22 apartments with a further 30 flats in its 1.1-acre grounds was approved in 2017, with 20 pre-commencement conditions. However, no works ever began on site and the planning permission is presumed to since have lapsed.
Repeated break-ins and vandalism were reported in the local press in September 2026, shortly after which it appeared on a commercial auction site with a guide price of £2,000,000 and marketed as a 'development opportunity'. Though the proposed conversion is potentially reversible, the Society remains extremely concerned at the potential loss of original features and the infilling of the main prayer hall, believing that I would be far better suited as a place of worship by another faith group, a home for a community organisation, or a performance venue.
