When his captors tried to turn him into a symbol of surrender, he secretly injured himself rather than allow them to use him against his own country. He had no idea whether he would survive. He had no idea whether he would ever see his family again. But he knew one thing. He would not break. On September 9, 1965, Navy Commander James Stockdale launched from the USS Oriskany for a combat mission over North Vietnam. His A-4 Skyhawk was hit by enemy fire, and the aircraft went down. Stockdale ejected over enemy territory, but the landing shattered bones in his body. Within hours, he had been captured. A decorated Navy pilot who had spent his life commanding others was suddenly a prisoner with no control over where he went or what happened to him next. Then came the years that almost nobody outside the prison could see. Stockdale spent more than seven years inside North Vietnamese prison camps, a total of 2,714 days. Nearly eight years of his life were taken from him. He was held at Hoa Lo Prison, the place American prisoners called the “Hanoi Hilton.” His captors wanted information. They wanted statements. They wanted propaganda. Most of all, they wanted a high-ranking American officer to appear defeated. Stockdale refused to give them that. The punishment followed. He endured repeated interrogations, severe physical abuse, and long periods in solitary confinement. But the most important battle was not taking place between the guards and the prisoners. It was happening inside the minds of the captured Americans. Stockdale was the senior naval officer among the POWs, which meant he carried responsibility for far more than his own survival. Other prisoners looked to him for leadership, and even from inside captivity, he worked to create some kind of order. The POWs developed secret communication systems, tapping messages through walls and creating codes to pass instructions and encouragement from one cell to another. Stockdale made sure that isolation did not turn into surrender. Then came the moment his captors had been waiting for. They planned to use Stockdale in a propaganda appearance. A famous American commander publicly admitting defeat would have been a powerful image for North Vietnam. Stockdale knew exactly what they wanted. So he made an unimaginable choice. He injured himself so badly that he could not be presented as a symbol of cooperation. He would rather endure more pain than give his captors the victory they were looking for. While James was fighting inside the prison walls, his wife, Sybil Stockdale, was fighting another battle back home. She refused to let American POWs disappear from public attention. At first, families were encouraged to remain quiet, but Sybil would not accept that. She pushed the government for answers and spoke publicly about the treatment of American prisoners. She also helped organize the National League of Families of American Prisoners in Southeast Asia, which became a central force in the growing POW/MIA movement. James was fighting to stay alive. Sybil was fighting to make sure the world remembered that he and the other prisoners were still there. Then, after years of uncertainty, freedom finally came. In February 1973, Operation Homecoming brought American prisoners back from North Vietnam. After 2,714 days in captivity, James Stockdale finally walked out. The man who had left for war as a commander returned home as a symbol of endurance. But the years were gone. His children had grown up without him. His country had changed. His family had spent nearly eight years living with the same terrible uncertainty, never knowing exactly when, or even if, he would return. Then came the nation’s highest military honor. In 1976, President Gerald Ford awarded James Stockdale the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary leadership and courage as a prisoner of war. He came home older. Changed.
