Programming note: A highly anticipated but poorly timed European River cruise coincides with the dates of the 1945 World Series. In order for me to give both the series and my vacation the time and attention they deserve, I will defer the reporting on the Series until my return.
All over Detroit, #Tigers fans celebrated the AL championship, the final score was announced over the Detroit Police west side radio system. Fans went as crazy at the Telenews theater on Woodward as they did when the end of the war in Japan was announced.
In the joyous #Tigers clubhouse, the Free Press mentioned that everyone was happy, but wet. Steve O'Neill said that he has waited 36 years for this moment. He has been a manager in the minors and majors since 1929 and he has never won a pennant.
Hub Walker, batting for Newhouser (25-9), singled to begin the 9th inning with the Browns holding a 3-2 lead. Skeeter Webb bunted and Walker slid through the mud to beat the throw to 2nd base. Red Borom went in to run for Walker. Eddie Mayo also bunted and both runners moved up.
The Browns intentionally walked Doc Cramer to load the bases for Hank Greenberg. The Greenberg lined a 1-1 pitch down the left field line over the 351 foot mark for a grand slam HR (13), giving the #Tigers a 6-3 lead.
Al Benton pitched the 9th inning for the #Tigers. He gave up a leadoff single that was erase on a double play ball. Len Schulte grounded out to Webb at shortstop to end the game and the AL Pennant race.
Virgil Trucks pitched his first game after a 19 month stint in the Navy. He was pulled from the game in the 6th inning with the #Tigers ahead by the score of 2-1. The Browns grabbed an early lead on a first inning RBI single by Lou Finney.
The #Tigers were held scoreless by Nelson Potter until the 5th inning when Trucks walked, went to third on a single by Skeeter Webb and scored on a single by Eddie Mayo. In the 6th Roy Cullenbine walked and alertly went to second base on a pop foul to the catcher.
A 9th inning grand slam by Hank Greenberg turned a 3-2 lead for the St Louis Browns into a 6-3 #Tigers win and clinched the seventh American League pennant for Detroit.
A hardy crowd of 5,582 at Sportsman's Park braved 57 degree temperature and a 12th straight day of rain in St Louis to see this ball game, which was delayed for 50 minutes and played in a misty rain.
This was scheduled as a doubleheader, but the second game was cancelled when the #Tigers clinched the pennant.

#Tigers manager Steve O'Neill will pitch Virgil Trucks, discharged from the Navy three days ago, in game 1 and Stubby Overmire in game 2 tomorrow. O'Neill will hold Hal Newhouser for a relief appearance and/or a possible playoff with Washington and their left handed hitters.
If the #Tigers win one of the two games tomorrow (Sunday), they will face the Chicago Cubs in the World Series on Wednesday. Losing two games would mean a playoff game in Briggs Stadium against the Washington Senators on Monday.
Temperatures in the 40s and a cold rain has forced the postponement of this afternoon's game between the #Tigers and the St Louis Browns at Sportsman's Park. The game will be played as a part of a doubleheader tomorrow, the last day of the regular season.
