How to: Text in Thumbnails One might think everyone knows how text in thumbnails can be a game changer for video performance, but every single day I stumble across videos with shit thumbnail text. Here are some tips & tricks to improve the text in your thumbnails. 1. Word Limit: Keep it sweet and short. Up to three words is ideal. Four and five is okay. Six is acceptable, but don't go 6+. "The only hard rule I have is: In general I would stay away from having over five or six words" - @PaddyG96 2. Repeating titles: Thumbnail text should complement the video title. Think of alternative ways to express your video concept and then write that on thumbnail rather than repeating the title. When you repeat the title, it's just a wasted opportunity. 3. Visibility: Color-wise, you should always aim to reach the highest contrast between the text and the background. If you feel like this is something you struggle with, there are some excellent free tools online where you can check the contrast ratio between the colors. If your background isn't a solid color, but rather a busy gradient or pattern, consider adding black outline. MrBeast does this every time he uses text in his thumbnails. Size-wise, zoom out and observe. If the text becomes unreadable in a smaller format, make it larger. If it seems too dominant and distracts from other parts of the thumbnail, reduce its size. thumbsup.tv is a great tool for this experiment. 4. Fonts: For easy readability, avoid Serif, and use Sans Serif fonts instead. Sans Serif fonts are clear, bold and easy to digest. They have clean, simple lines. Serif fonts, on the other hand feature small decorative strokes—serifs—at the ends of characters. These fonts may unnecessarily make the thumbnail look busy due to decorative aspect of it. Especially when viewed in smaller format.
