Re Post of an interview @Konami Did with me about my My #MetalGearSolid art.
INTERVIEW WITH ARTIST, EMILIO LOPEZ
Posted : May 29th, 2015
--You’ve seen his @METALGEAR works all over the net, and those following the art scene are no doubt familiar with our guest #EmilioLopez.
Thanks for talking with us Emilio, if you could go ahead and introduce yourself and where people may have seen your work?
I have been a professional freelance artist for over 16 years and have worked in almost all aspects of entertainment from animation, Comics, trading card games, licensing art, even video games.
For the greater part of my art career I have worked in animation production. Some of the more notable shows I have worked on are #TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles, #TheVentureBros, #Metalocalypse, and #BlackDynamite.
In comics I have worked as a colorist and illustrator. #AspenComics, #DCComics and #ImageComics are some of the more notable studios I have worked, and currently work for. At DC comics I have worked on #StaticShock, #DetectiveComics, #JusticeLeague Beyond, and #BatmanBeyond 2.0.
Currently I work at DC and #ImageComics. At DC I am working on a new series called "#WeAreRobin" and at Image I am finishing off a run on “#TechJacket” (a comic created by @RobertKirkman, the creator of The Walking Dead). I am also preparing to return to The Venture Bros animated series.
--What inspired you to create this series of METAL GEAR-inspired works?
Actually, it was a couple of different things. Mostly, it was the chance to draw all of my favorite moments and characters from the #MetalGear series. It was also the chance to explore the different aspects of my own style. To some, my work can seem a bit amorphous. It can be sketchy, inky, cartoony, clean, dirty and painterly, but it is all the same hand. Also, I'm a bit of a workaholic (haha).
Often, after I finish my freelance work, I work on my own projects because I like to stay active. I spend about six hours doing freelance and maybe another five to six on this stuff. Next time you see a post from me, check the timestamp. Sometimes I post this stuff at ungodly hours (haha).
Art has always been a big part of the Metal Gear series; especially when #YojiShinkawa took over as character and mecha designer on the first Metal Gear Solid. His work is Iconic. My Metal Gear artwork in its way is paying tribute to all the things I enjoy about the series. That is also why I created my little art book, "Solid Zero."
"Solid Zero" is a limited run tribute artbook I created for fans of my comic and illustration work to pick up at conventions. It collects all the Metal Gear Solid art I have created over the years. The first year I put it together I wasn't able to complete all the art I wanted to include. One of the reasons why you are seeing so much Metal Gear art posted from me is that I am completing the book. I designed about 30 pieces. The final version of the book will be called "Solid Zero: Substance."
--What is your artistic process in creating works like these?
It all starts with the idea. Ideas come from a bunch of different places and at different times. So when I work on freelance, I keep a drawing program open or bring a sketchbook with me whenever those idea strike and I do a quick thumbnail. When an idea comes, I see exactly what it will look like so I know in advance if I want to paint an image or do an inked style etc.
After the thumbnail, I start putting together all of the reference material I need to assist me with the creation of the piece. Finding reference for me isn't difficult because I own all the Japanese Art of Metal Gear Solid books. I will even take photos of myself or action figures in the poses or for the lighting I need.
Sometimes I will look at licensing art and screenshots to get the details not shown in the art books. The Fury for instance was incredibly difficult to find reference for. There are no images of him with his helmet off showing the breathing apparatus over his mouth. Other artists have come up with their own solutions to this problem but I wanted mine to be as accurate as possible. So using a bunch of different sources of reference, I created a sketch study to figure out how it all works and connects to his face.
Once preparation is done, I do a sketch. The sketch is usually done relatively loose. I don't like to do super clean sketches, especially if I plan to ink it. I find that if I get two tight, my ink work looks a little like it is traced. You want your ink work to have the energy of a first drawing. Sometimes if you sketch too tight you lose that energy in the ink. For painted work I paint directly over the sketch.
I ink by hand or digitally; it all depends on how I feel. I do a lot of my drawing, inking and even painting in a Japanese program called Paint Tool Sai. It is a very versatile program, though it doesn't have as much control over the image as Photoshop does. I tend to use Sai and Photoshop in tandem.
In Photoshop, I do all my flat color work, layer effects, texture work and final color grading. I also have a lot of great brushes for splatters and strokes to populate an image and make it feel more like it was drawn on paper etc.
--Who is your favorite #MGS character/Which is your favorite MGS and why?
Wow, good question! Without a doubt, I have to say my favorite character is “The Boss” from #MetalGearSolid3. She is the key stone to the whole series. Without her, there probably wouldn't be a Solid Snake. I think she is a great example of a strong female character who never loses her power. Even in the end, she goes out in battle like a warrior. As many times as I have completed #MGS3, it is still difficult emotionally to kill her, especially when you find out the real reason she defected and joined Colonel Volgin.
My favorite game in the MGS series? That’s a hard question. I kind of have to go back to the original Metal Gear from 1988 on the #Nintendo Entertainment System. That is where it all started for me. Don't get me wrong, I love every game in the series, but that one has the most nostalgia and the most memories.
I remember when my cousin first brought it over to my house, we played way into the night. We used to take turns playing to see which one of us could get past an area. We even snuck in plays when my mom was asleep. I remember those incredibly long codes you needed to put in if you wanted to continue where you left off.
No other game did what Metal Gear did at the time. It was a great experience and I have been along for the ride ever since.
That is also what made waiting for the next game so hard. Every console generation that came after, I always hoped that a new Metal Gear game would be released. It wasn't till 1998, 10 years later, that I got my wish with Metal Gear Solid on the original #Playstation. By that time, Metal Gear had been almost forgotten in the West after the lackluster Metal Gear: Snake’s Revenge. Only myself and some die hards were like “Oh my god, it’s Metal Gear! It's back!” Then when everyone played it, it exploded and I was like “See? It’s awesome!”
Hey, isn’t June the anniversary of the release of Metal Gear in the US? Happy 27th birthday, Metal Gear NES!
--Is there MGS content you’ve yet to tackle artistically you are looking forward to?
I have a bucket list of things I want to draw, but I am really looking forward to drawing this piece I planned for Quiet and DD. I don't get to draw animals much so its a nice change. It’s a little difficult drawing #MetalGearSolidV: #ThePhantomPain related stuff because I know next to nothing about the game.

Yeah, I know I’m kind of everywhere. Told you I’m a workaholic (haha).
--Which is your favorite MGS-inspired work you’ve created?
Wow, that’s like asking who is your favorite kid. But if I have to choose, I would have to say the Che Big Boss piece I drew. I made that piece specifically to give to @Kojima_Hideo@HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN @HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN Kojima and it actually took me four years of near misses to finally get the illustration to him when I met him.
Along the way, I was able to give Big Boss prints to fans and industry professionals, like Metal Gear cosplayer #AmieLynn, @rob_pearson86 of PlayStation UK / PlayStation Access, @RyanPayton, director of #Republique / Former #MetalGearSolid4 game producer, #ElectricPlayground host #VictorLucas, and Greg Miller @GameOverGreggy from IGN (who gave me a huge hug).
I even got to meet some of the Metal Gear staff like Senior Producer Ken-ichiro Imaizumi @Ken1555 , Assistant Producer Sean Eyestone, and Composer @Ludvig_Forssell . When I finally met @Kojima_Hideo at E3 2014, he seemed to really like my artwork and even took a photo with me. I ended up in a short clip on the #KojimaStation podcast. Also, some of the folks who I gave Big Boss prints to displayed them on their Youtube videos.
In the end, the four year journey was worth it. I did not get to give Hideo Kojima the art right away but if I did, I wouldn't have been able to meet a bunch of amazing people. To this day I wonder if #HideoKojima decided to display it, I hope he did.
On the back it says
“Good luck on your next game.”

A drawing of Higgs I did from #Deathstranding. Can't say I drew him a lot. While he looks cool in his suit. I can't say I liked him very much, he was utterly vile & annoying. Pretty much an Ahole internet troll. An agent of chaos, bent on destruction because they can. #Halloween

Today with a heavy heart I have some of the saddest news I have ever had to share. one of our own Bigmike has passed away.
He has been part of our lives for years and has been a close friend. We are saddened by this news and I can’t even take this. I am in tears writing this. I can’t believe it. Can’t stop crying.
