Aujourd’hui se referme une semaine importante. Historique.

Today marks the end of an important, historic week, for Nice, for our Ocean, for our planet. It has been an honor for our @VilledeNice to host this Conference. I am convinced: there will be a before and after the UNOC in Nice.
Never before had we brought together, at the same time, scientists, governments, the financial and economic sectors, and local decision-makers.

#Seamounts are hotspots for marine life, bringing cold, nutrient-rich water up from the deep, fuelling marine food webs & attracting species. This is just 1️⃣ of many benefits to the ocean's health.

From brain tissue to bone marrow, microplastics have been detected virtually everywhere in the human body.
That’s why it’s crucial that a @UN #PlasticsTreaty include binding measures to cut microplastic pollution. pew.org/4e32bfz

Speaking at #IISF in Jakarta today on the subject of capitalizing on the Sustainable Blue Economy, emphasis was placed on staying true to SDG14. We must ever strive to achieve balance between conservation & sustainable use, and in the process make peace with Nature.

For decades, Sri Lanka’s mangroves disappeared, leaving communities exposed to disasters like the 2004 tsunami.
Now, by growing instead of just planting, Sri Lanka has restored 500ha, aiming for 10,000 by 2030.

Mangroves are great champions for carbon sequestration and biodiversity, but they also provide tourism and recreation benefits, as evidenced in a visit today to Jakarta’s inner city Angke Kapuk mangrove nature park.

Grateful for the insightful dialogue with Ambassador Peter Thomson (@ThomsonFiji), UN Special Envoy on Ocean, on the necessity of the @UN Decade of Ocean Science (2021-2030), on COP 16 CBD in Cali being key milestone for global #biodiversity action, the importance of the 30 by 30 target, and the precautionary pause of the deep-sea mining to safeguard #marine ecosystems and promote sustainable ocean practices. #OceanConservation #SeabedMining
