In the 90’s CEOs of tobacco companies stood in congress armed with fake science and attempted to play down the dangers of cigarettes. They denied that tobacco is addictive and dangerous and causes cancer, and suppressed their own research that confirmed it.

Public participation alert Parliament is inviting Kenyans to give their views on the Tobacco Control (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which proposes changes around the regulation of electronic nicotine delivery systems, including e-cigarettes and related products. Public hearings will take place 24–26 September 2026. This is what public participation is for: read the Bill, understand what is being proposed, ask questions, and make your views heard. Don’t wait until a law is passed to ask what happened. Read the official notice and public participation details #TobaccoControl

The role of young people in tobacco control goes beyond being beneficiaries. Young people bring lived experiences, fresh perspectives and the ability to connect with their peers in ways that can strengthen tobacco control efforts. #NairobiYouthWatchDog

Gender-responsive tobacco policy therefore needs better disaggregated data, targeted prevention and taxation that considers who uses, who is exposed, and who ultimately bears the cost. #TobaccoControl #GenderResponsivePolicy #HealthTaxation
Men still record higher tobacco use, but women often carry hidden costs through second-hand smoke exposure, caregiving and household economic strain. Among adolescents, the gender gap is also narrowing. #TobaccoControl #GenderResponsivePolicy #HealthTaxation

The High Court’s decision to lift Kenya’s shisha ban undermines public health. We must put children’s health before commercial interests. The Ministry of Health must urgently appeal. #TobaccoControl #PublicHealth

#DYK that for every 1 shilling that Kenya gets in revenue from tobacco, the Kenyan economy loses 3 shillings from tobacco-related illnesses. We call upon the government to reinvest tobacco tax revenue into healthcare and education #UnmaskTheAppealKe

When tobacco stays cheap, more youths start smoking. Raising tobacco taxes remains the most powerful way to cut use, yet Kenya’s cigarette tax share is still below global recommendations. Policymakers must adopt annual tax increases that outpace income growth. #UnmaskTheAppealKe

In Kenya, social media has normalized nicotine use among youth.4 in 10 adolescents now see it regularly on their screens. Don't scroll past manipulation. Spot nicotine content disguised as entertainment? Call it out. Break the silence. Challenge the algorithm. #UnmaskTheAppealKe

You see nicotine content once, twice, then everywhere. Soon it starts feeling normal. But familiar does not mean harmless. Sometimes the real question is: who benefits when our youth stop questioning it? #UnmaskTheAppealKe #WNTD2026

The reality is alarming. 🛑 Children as young as 5 in Kenya are being exposed to smokeless tobacco, and 6-year-olds are using nicotine pouches. Tobacco addiction shouldn't start before choices even begin. Protect our children! 🇰🇪👇#UnmaskTheAppealKe #NoToYouthSmoking
