#ProjectESCA lives! @ALCESonline and I developed this novel light lure with funding from @PureOceanFund. It uses a quiet frame, illumination invisible to the animals, a 360-degree camera, and simulated bioluminescence to attract shy deepsea animals.

This week's highlight was this beautiful lass. A Himantolophus. Doll-like eyes and an elaborate fishing lure (the esca).
It came with a note for Andrew. He's an obsessive. If you don't believe me, check out the latest @DeepSeaPod episode all about #deepsea #anglerfish – at Wellington City, New Zealand

A larval Macrourid sighting at 917 m! ROV pilots filmed future-fish during the #OBVI #LivingBioreactors expedition, supported by @schmidtsciences. Scientists are studying midwater organisms and how they sequester carbon.
The day before heading out to #Antarctica to look for the #colossalsquid with our low-light/far-red camera, I caught #IronLungMovie and loved it.
Now I'm in an inhospitable environment looking for monsters in an ocean of blood 😐.

The shapes of #PancakeIce are really satisfying. They remind me of jellyfish, giant waterlilies and some sort of paper sculpture.
