In January 1931, Albert Einstein and Charlie Chaplin met in Los Angeles during the premiere of Chaplin’s film City Lights. Einstein, one of the most famous scientists in the world, was fascinated by Chaplin’s ability to communicate with millions without saying a word. As they traveled together to the premiere, crowds gathered around their car, cheering and applauding. Einstein reportedly told Chaplin, “What I admire most about your art is its universality. You do not say a word, and yet the world understands you.”
Chaplin smiled and gave the famous witty reply: “It’s true. But your fame is even greater. The world admires you, when no one understands you.” The exchange perfectly captured the contrast between the two men, Chaplin was loved for making people laugh without words, while Einstein was celebrated for ideas that few people could fully understand. The story has become one of the most memorable anecdotes about their meeting, although the exact wording of the conversation is generally treated as a famous anecdote rather than a fully documented verbatim transcript.
Despite being famous for his revolutionary ideas in physics, Einstein was also an accomplished violinist. He began playing as a child and often said that music was an important part of his life. He particularly loved Mozart and would sometimes turn to his violin when he was struggling with a difficult problem.
Also, Chaplin was not just an actor and comedian, he composed much of the music for his films later in his career. In fact, he won an Academy Award for Best Original Dramatic Score for Limelight decades after the film was made. One of his most famous compositions, “Smile,” later became a popular song performed by many artists.

🎸 Hendrix considered his Brook Street flat in London to be his true home base during his peak creative years. Which of his three studio albums—Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold as Love, or Electric Ladyland—is your personal favorite? 🎸 👇️
