Even if you live with just one cat, it's a good idea to offer choice in resting spots. Some cats have definite preferences and prefer only one location but others may switch out depending on time of day, time of year, whether they want to sunbathe or cuddle in a covered bed. If you have a multicat household it's recommended that there are choices for napping spots. What is your cat's preference?

Increasing vertical territory by installing cat shelves or walkways is a wonderful way to increase enrichment. In a multicat household it can help ease tension because there are more options for personal space. One thing to be aware of though is to make sure you don't create dead-ends.

Although there are cats who don't mind using a covered box, in general, cats prefer the safety of being able to see if anyone is approaching so they can escape safely.

Even if your cat enjoys being around people and loves affection, there are probably some times when being undisturbed is preferred.

The whiskers are very sensitive. They aid cats in detecting vibrations in the air and changes in air currents. This ability helps cats navigate when there is no light. Cats use whiskers in the dark in the same way you would hold out your arms so your fingers could feel for objects. By determining changes in air currents, cats can avoid walking into an object. This ability to detect air currents also helps when hunting because cats can detect the potential swift movement of prey. It's not unusual to find a whisker on the floor every now and then. Whisker shedding is normal and another will grow in. However, if you notice a number of whiskers that have come out, contact your veterinarian.

Take a second look at your training technique. Have you been focusing only on the unwanted behavior and missing the times your cat does exactly what you want? Remember to reward those positive steps.

Don't make the trip to the veterinary clinic a terrifying experience for your cat and a dreaded experience for you. Gently train your cat to become more comfortable with being in the carrier and with travel. Use gentle techniques to help your cat accept being handled. If you have a kitten, start this training immediately because it will pay off when your youngster becomes an adult cat. If your cat is already fully grown, you can still use TLC training techniques to ease the stress of being in a carrier.

Have you played with your cat today? It's time to get that favorite toy out and let your cat show off those impressive hunting skills. It's good physical exercise, it helps combat boredom, and it's a wonderful way to build confidence and trust. And, last but not least, it's fun. Your cat deserves that!

Don't startle your cat by grabbing from behind. No one likes being startled. Make your presence known and approach in a non-threatening manner. A direct approach from the front can make some cats feel threatened as well. Come into view slightly from the side. As you approach, pay attention to your cat's body language as well. The cat may be signaling that distance is wanted rather than interaction. You can also use your voice in a soft tone to announce your presence.

Does your cat zoom around the house in the wee hours of the morning? Doing one last interactive play session right before bed may help reset kitty's internal clock.

Don't wait until things get out of hand. If you suspect there's tension in your multicat household, take steps to address it right away. You may not see physical fighting but you might notice subtle signs of intimidation.

Cats don't misbehave. Behaviors are repeated because they serve a purpose. If you want to change an unwanted behavior, figure out why the cat needs it so you can offer a better alternative.

Training your cat isn't about obedience and showing that you are in charge. Training should be about better communication between the two of you. Trust is a huge factor in effective training.

If you're in the beginning stage of introducing a new cat to your resident cat(s), take a breath and slow down. The cats need to set the pace. You have a resident cat who is scared that an intruder has invaded, and the new cat feels totally overwhelmed by being in an unfamiliar environment with a less-than-friendly feline welcoming committee. Use a positive approach and don't punish for any aggressive displays.

Regularly monitor the litter box set-up to make sure it still meets your cat's needs. The box that was a perfect fit when your cat was an active youngster may no longer be comfortable now that kitty is a senior with mobility issues. Or maybe the cat doesn't like the sudden change in litter type. Maybe some members of the family aren't being consistent in scooping and cleaning the box? The set-up shouldn't just be created and then forgotten because circumstances can change. Pay attention to your cat's behavior when it comes to the litter box environment.
