🚨INTERESTING FACT: SLOVENIA VOTED 88.5% TO LEAVE YUGOSLAVIA — 25 YEARS LATER 45% SAID THE BREAKUP HARMED THE COUNTRY, AND 41% SAID IT HELPED 🇸🇮 Slovenia is the small Alpine country north of the Balkans, about two million people, language of its own, borders on Austria and Italy. In December 1990, 88.5 percent of those who voted said yes to leaving Yugoslavia. The war that followed lasted ten days. Croatia and Bosnia spent years in it. Slovenia did not. That is why the memory split. A Gallup poll across the old federation asked whether the breakup harmed or helped. Serbia said harmed, 81 percent. Bosnia, 77. Montenegro, 65. North Macedonia, 61. Croatia said it helped, 55 percent. Slovenia landed in the middle: 45 percent harmed, 41 percent helped. Researchers who tracked the answers said the 45 percent were not voting to rebuild the state. They were scoring the bills, the rents and the jobs that used to be guaranteed. Inside Yugoslavia, Slovenia was the rich republic. About 8 percent of the population produced about 20 percent of the GDP and close to a third of the exports. Belgrade taxed it to subsidize the poorer south. Brands such as Gorenje, Elan and Krka sold into a closed market of 20 million. By 1989 Slovenian output per person was several times Kosovo’s. After Tito died the federation slid into debt and inflation. Ljubljana asked for a loose union. Belgrade refused. Slovenia left. The nostalgia that stayed is not a flag. Sociologist Mitja Velikonja, in a Ljubljana study called Titostalgia, and a city-museum booklet titled Yugoslavia, Homeland of My Youth, both describe a fondness for the safety net, the coast holidays and the rock bands, not for the one-party state. About 45 percent of young Slovenes still hear Yugoslavia talked about at home, usually by a parent or a grandparent. The studies’ line is blunt: it is a memory, not a programme. Zero in the polling is a vote to give the country back. What did stay is the culture the state tried to scrub. Official Slovenia sold itself as a tidy Alpine cousin of Austria. The clubs did the opposite. Bijelo Dugme and the Belgrade rock of the 1980s are still party songs. Serbian turbo-folk sells out rooms in Ljubljana. Magnifico built a career on Balkan brass and called himself a Balkan charlatan. Children of the workers who came north for the factories became a whole subculture, čefurji. The food on the corner is burek and ćevapi, not strudel. Parliament still fights 1945. Janez Janša’s right calls the left unreconstructed communists and points at the post-war killings. The left answers with the partisan war against the Nazis and treats a red-star shirt as a protest against hospital privatisation. By night their children sing a 1984 Belgrade song they never lived through. Slovenia kept the euro and the passport. It lost the feeling of being the richest room in the house, and became a small supplier on the German border. The 45 percent are talking about that, not about putting the federation back. Is Yugonostalgia in Ljubljana a memory of a safer life, or a scorecard for an EU that never made Slovenia into Austria?
