The law is very clear: where the total votes cast in a polling unit exceed the number of accredited voters, the result from that polling unit should be cancelled. We have substantial evidence suggesting that, in some elections conducted under Mahmood Yakubu, collation officers refused to cancel results even when the number of valid votes cast exceeded the BVAS accreditation record. They saw the discrepancy and still collated the results. INEC under Mahmood Yakubu was a criminal enterprise, and I say this with every sense of responsibility. How do you explain the Kogi State governorship election, in which an LGA that recorded turnout below 20% in the presidential, National Assembly, and State House of Assembly elections suddenly jumped to over 94% turnout? In that same election, one party received 98% of the votes, and that single LGA contributed almost one-third of all the votes cast in the entire contest. How do you also explain that roughly half of the results from that LGA were uploaded using non-BVAS devices? Yet INEC accepted all the results and declared a winner. One red flag may have an explanation. But when multiple independent red flags begin to corroborate one another, you have to dig deeper. Something is going on. Politicians will try to cheat and manipulate elections. But INEC has the power to make such manipulation extremely difficult. We cannot build an electoral system that depends on trusting individual INEC officials to always do the right thing. That is where technology comes in. Let us use technology to make election manipulation harder and easier to detect. This is why we are advocating for INEC to publish the electronic BVAS accreditation record on the IReV portal, alongside the polling-unit result and Form EC8B from ward collation. Let Nigerians see what BVAS recorded, what was declared at the polling unit, and what eventually made it into ward collation. Prof. Amupitan, please do the right thing. Write your name in gold. Make the electoral process genuinely transparent and credible, and Nigerians will remember you for it.
