This is a hard article to read, but I hope you'll do so. I've spent some time reporting on widespread rape and other sexual violence of Palestinian male and female prisoners by Israeli authorities, and the article is now published. The assault victims were warned not to give speak of what they endured -- they were sometimes told they would be killed or raped if they gave interviews -- but they found the courage to do so. One man described being raped three times in a single day in Israeli prison, the third time after he tried to protest. A young woman said the guards would come in at the beginning of each shift and strip her naked and abuse her. Another reported that she was shown photos of herself being raped and warned they would be released unless she cooperated with Israeli intelligence. Even three children who had been detained told me they had been sexually abused. Look, whatever our position on the Middle East, we should be able to agree on being anti-rape. Sexual assaults were horrific when Israeli women were targeted on Oct. 7, and they're equally horrific when Israeli authorities use them against Palestinians day after day after day. We should be able to find common ground in opposing rape. Here's a gift link to the article: nytimes.com/2026/05/11/opini…

Statement on BBC correspondent Feras Kilani and colleagues being detained at gunpoint by Israel Defense Forces -
On Friday 9 May whilst filming in Southern Syria, BBC News Arabic correspondent Feras Kilani, along with two other BBC staff members and four freelance colleagues, were detained for seven hours and held at gunpoint by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
The team have described how they were tied up, blindfolded, strip searched, interrogated and threatened. Their electronic devices were also taken from them and material was deleted.
The BBC strongly objects to the treatment of our staff and freelancers in this way. Despite making clear to the soldiers on multiple occasions they were working for the BBC, the behaviour they were subjected to is wholly unacceptable.
We have registered a complaint with the Israeli military but are yet to receive a response.

New evidence unearthed by Sky News contradicts Israel's official account of the killing of 15 aid workers.
In a statement to Sky News, the IDF said it is "conducting an inquiry into the incident, which took place in a combat zone, to uncover the truth".

15 months of foreign journalists being denied unfettered access to Gaza - while those inside showed us just how to report under one of the world’s most violent sieges and in the most horrifying conditions. Bravo Palestinian journalists
Western journalists will soon flood into Gaza. Many will report the appalling conditions they find there as a revelation.
Don’t be fooled. At Al Jazeera we have been laying bare the full horror all along. “Nobody can say they didn’t know.”

For the last six months, @TierneyEB and I have followed Mohammed and Hussam Hamada on their fight to get to the Olympics. This is a remarkable story of Palestinian resistance, love and hope. Watch The Gaza Man: aje.io/hmvzow.
Before every weightlifting competition, Mohammed Hamada thinks of Gaza. He thinks of the mass grave he dug for Palestinians. He's an athlete in a different realm - all while chasing an #Olympics dream.

Watch this it’s fascinating - I asked James Timpson what he’d do about prisons and sentencing if he was in charge. He believes only a third of prisoners in jail should definitely be there. He’s now in charge of prisons (but not sentencing).
