The activation forms part of the broader stakeholder engagement, conducted in partnership with the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), the South African Union of Students (SAUS), and the South African Technical and Vocational Education and Training Students Association (SATVETSA).
Students had the opportunity to interact directly with Rental Housing Tribunal officials, raising questions about their rights and responsibilities as tenants, and learning how to lodge complaints or report unfair practices more effectively. The initiative aims to empower young tenants by increasing awareness of rental housing legislation, promoting access to dispute resolution mechanisms, and ensuring that students are better equipped to protect themselves against unlawful rental practices.
By engaging students at campus level, the Department and its partners are strengthening advocacy for fair housing rights while fostering a culture of accountability within the rental sector.

Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane delivered a keynote address at the day 3 of the Planning Africa Conference convened under the theme: “Digital Technologies and Sustainable Futures: Pathway for Urban and Regional Planning in Africa,” at the Century City Conference Centre.
"The planning profession also has an important role in addressing the deterioration of some of our inner-city areas. Abandoned, unsafe and unlawfully controlled buildings can present serious risks to residents, surrounding communities and the functioning of the city.
Building hijacking and the unlawful exploitation of property must be addressed through appropriate law-enforcement, legal and municipal processes. At the same time, we must distinguish the criminal conduct of those who exploit buildings from the circumstances of vulnerable residents, many of whom have limited access to affordable accommodation." Minister Simelane during her keynote address.
The conference provided an opportunity for both SAPI and National Department of Human Settlements to engage different stakeholders to promote inclusive and participatory planning processes aimed at addressing spatial inequalities, housing backlogs, climate-resilient settlements, and sustainable rural and urban development
