Small Sided Games For Athletic Development Course
Most training relies on controlled drills & predictable patterns. But sport is dynamic, unpredictable, & constantly changing.
This course shows you how to design training environments that behave like sport, activities that look, feel, & act like the game itself.
Through practical video demonstrations & coaching guidance, you’ll learn how to use SSGs to develop movement skill, decision-making, gamespeed, & adaptability.
If you’re a coach, athlete, or parent, this course will give you the tools to build better training environments & unlock true skill transfer to sport.

Your child doesn’t need another speed camp…
They need something most training programs are missing.
Faster sprint times. Bigger lifts. Higher jumps.
Impressive numbers. But here’s the question nobody seems to ask: Can they actually use it when the game gets messy?
Sport isn’t a collection of rehearsed movements. It’s chaos. Pressure. Decisions. Mistakes. Adaptation.
At #uofstrength, we believe athletic development should prepare individuals for the REAL demands of sport.
🔹 Stop memorizing movements. Start solving problems.
🔹 Stop chasing perfect technique. Start developing adaptable solutions.
🔹 Stop isolating physical qualities. Start integrating them.
🔹 Stop treating every athlete the same. Start respecting individual movement signatures.
🔹 Stop confusing getting tired with getting better.
Strength matters. Speed matters. Power matters.
But without perception, decision-making, & adaptability, we’re only developing part of the athlete.
The goal isn’t to create the best athlete in the weight room. It’s to develop a HUMAN who can thrive in the unpredictable world of sport.
A different approach to athletic development starts December 1st. Join The U — Bedford NH!

Athletic development isn’t about rehearsing perfect movements in predictable environments. It’s about learning to solve problems when things get messy.
Here’s a look at a recent small sided game (SSG) where we manipulated constraints to challenge defensive decision-making, awareness, & adaptability.
The Setup & Rules:
🔹 Offense initiates with a drop-in movement.
🔹 Only ONE offensive participant can secure possession of the ball.
🔹 The ball carrier must attack the goal on the same side as their starting position.
🔹 The defender’s objective is to steal the offensive participant’s scarf.
🔹 Only ONE defender is allowed in play.
The Challenge?
The defender must scan, recognize emerging opportunities, anticipate intentions, & decide when & where to attack.
No scripted patterns. Just perception, decisions, & movement emerging from the interaction.

Speed camps. Strength camps. Cookie-cutter programs.
The problem? Athletic development doesn’t happen in isolation.
Strength & speed matter. But so do perception, decision-making, adaptability, & individual movement solutions.
At #uofstrength, we take a different approach:
🔹 Integrate, don’t isolate physical qualities.
🔹 Blend closed tasks with open environments.
🔹 Develop adaptable solutions, not rehearsed patterns.
🔹 Respect individual constraints & movement signatures.
🔹 Apply principles, not rigid prescriptions.
Every individual brings different capabilities, experiences, & movement possibilities.
The goal isn’t to make everyone move the same. It’s to help each individual discover what works for THEM.
Less specialization. More integration.
Develop the HUMAN before the athlete.

Pattern Recognition vs. Perceptual Attunement: Rethinking How Athletes Learn to Read the Game
theuofstrength.com/articles/…
Every individual has a unique movement signature shaped by the interaction between the individual, task, & environment.
Movement isn’t one-size-fits-all. Neither is athletic development. These signatures emerge from a combination of constraints:
🔹 Physical: Structure, force potential, elasticity, pretensioning, & movement capabilities.
🔹 Psychological: Perception, anticipation, decision-making, & problem-solving.
The goal isn’t to make every individual move the same way.
It’s to help them discover smooth, adaptable, & effective solutions that reflect their unique capabilities.
This requires a shift in coaching philosophy:
❌ Stop chasing identical movement patterns.
✅ Start creating environments that encourage exploration, adaptation, & learning.
Less correction. More discovery.
Think LONG-TERM development, not short-term perfection.

Chaos gets a bad rap. But when designed with intention, it becomes a powerful catalyst for learning.
Unpredictability creates opportunities to perceive, adapt, & solve movement problems in real time.
Here’s a look at a recent roughhousing game where we introduced one simple constraint: Unilateral shoulder battle.
One constraint. Endless movement solutions.
Our youthletes were challenged to:
🔹 Reorganize their bodies under pressure
🔹 Manage their base of support
🔹 Explore different force application strategies
🔹 Adapt to constantly changing interactions
The objective? Create problems worth solving.
Less prescription. More exploration.
Chaos doesn’t compromise skill development. It creates opportunities for skill to emerge.
Athletic Development is Not Fitness Training
Stronger. Faster. More powerful.
But does it transfer to the court, field, or ice?
Capacity matters. CONTEXT changes everything.
Sport isn’t about isolated physical qualities. It’s about perceiving, deciding, and adapting under contextual pressure.
At #uofstrength, we develop BOTH:
🔹 Capacity — Building the physical tools.
🔹 Adaptability — Learning when, where, & how to express them.
Because improving the parts doesn’t automatically improve the whole.
Build capacity. Develop adaptability. Train the HUMAN.
📍 THE U OF STRENGTH IS MOVING TO BEDFORD, NH!
Still running the same cone drills from decades ago & wondering why those movements don’t transfer to sport?
Agility isn’t about memorizing patterns. It’s about perceiving, adapting, & solving problems in context.

Closed drills develop technique. Opponents create problems to solve.
Add another human, & everything changes. Space matters. Timing matters. Deception matters.
Tag-like activities create opportunities to:
▪️ Explore evasion & escape strategies
▪️ Develop defensive matching skills
▪️ Strengthen perception-action coupling
▪️ Discover adaptable movement solutions
The Activity: 1v1 Lateral Mirroring — Escape or Tag
The Offensive Goal: Escape the defender & get both feet outside the starting boundaries without being tagged.
The Constraints:
🔹 Offense initiates the rep
🔹 3 seconds to escape
🔹 No tagging until one offensive 🦶exits the starting area
🔹 Lateral movements only
🔹 Defender stays on their designated side
Simple rules. Complex interactions. Endless solutions.
Train the interaction, not just the movement.
Deadlifts & Dunks!
Force development goes far beyond barbells & dumbbells.
At #uofstrength, we combine traditional strength training with unconventional activities to develop two important qualities:
1️⃣ Force Potential — Build the Engine
▪️ Trap Bar Deadlift
▪️ Work up to 5, 3 or 1+ Reps
▪️ Rep range is dependent on the training week
▪️5s week= 5-10 reps / 3s week= 3-8 reps / 1s week= 1-5 reps
2️⃣ Force Expression — Use the Engine
▪️ Seated Dunking Activity
▪️ 3-5 repetitions
▪️ Emphasis on vertical projection, coordinating force, & expressing power through a skillful manner
The goal isn’t just to produce more force. It’s to develop individuals who can express it in different ways.
Build the potential. Explore the expression.
Isometrics + Gameplay
Two often overlooked tools that are staples in our youthlete COD development.
Isometrics slow things down, allowing athletes to explore key shapes, feel foot pressure, & generate force with intent.
Gameplay brings movement to life by connecting perception, decision-making, & action through meaningful problems.
One develops force & positional awareness. The other creates opportunities to express movement solutions under uncertainty.
Here’s a recent lateral COD pairing:
1️⃣ ISO Angled Lateral Single Leg Knee Punch
▪️ Wall Support + Heel Lift
▪️ 2–4 Sets × 4–6 Seconds
2️⃣ Balloon Toss + Lateral Movement Constraints
▪️ 2–4 Sets × 1–3 Reps
▪️ Tap one balloon at a time
▪️ No consecutive taps with the same implement
▪️ Lateral movement only (no sprinting)
The result? High intent, engagement, & meaningful movement repetitions.
Don’t just rehearse the cut. Develop the physical qualities and perceptual skills needed to solve the problem.
Squats. Deadlifts. Box Jumps. Vertical Jumps.
Fantastic tools. But they share one common limitation: Limited horizontal force development.
Especially during the developmental process, we need to expand the movement toolbox, not restrict it.
That’s why we incorporate a variety of diving actions throughout the training process.
✅Projecting the body through space
✅Managing horizontal forces
✅Exploring different movement solutions
✅Learning to manage momentum & total body launching angles
The goal isn’t to replace traditional movements. It’s to fill the gaps they leave behind.
Here’s a quick look at how we use the pre-training process to create context & prepare individuals for the demands of upcoming agility activities.
🔹 Contact Prep: Hip Battling
▪️ Manage COG under pressure
▪️ Explore effective force application strategies
▪️ Build solutions that transfer to more chaotic environments
🔹 Agility Game: 1v1 Lateral Mirroring Start + Spatial Constraints
▪️ Invite lateral COD opportunities
▪️ Manipulate space through compression & expansion
▪️ Challenge perception, decision-making, & movement adaptability
Pre-training isn’t separate from training. It’s an opportunity to introduce movement problems that become more complex as the session unfolds.
There’s a reason we don’t call it a “warmup” at #uofstrength. We’re not interested in athletes mindlessly checking boxes or rehearsing the same movements. We want individuals exploring, competing, solving problems, learning, & laughing.
Why? Because the pre-training process is training.
It’s an opportunity to prepare the entire human movement system:
▪️ Physical
▪️ Psychological
▪️ Emotional
▪️ Social
We typically conclude with one or two of four objectives:
1️⃣ Landing Prep — Island Hopping
2️⃣ Contact Prep — Crawl Battle & Unilateral Hand Tug-of-War
3️⃣ Speed Prep — Partner Resisted Marching
4️⃣ Gamespeed Prep — 1v1 Curved Drop-In, Turn & Tag or Score
Each activity presents a different movement problem, inviting individuals to explore, adapt, & find solutions.
The goal isn’t simply to raise body temperature. It’s to create meaningful experiences that prepare for the demands ahead.
Preparation isn’t separate from training. It’s an essential part of it.
Let learning drive performance.
